    Sub-$200 FF Mid-Length Rail System

Hey guys. I was set on the Midwest Industries FF T9 for a long while but then read about customer service issues with MI and also about the finish being easily marred on their rail systems. After that, I was set on the Troy TRX Extreme Battlerail but upon contacting them, I found out that even their 9" system won't work with the factory FSB, which is something I want to keep for various reasons (aesthetics, reliability, cost).

What are some other FF rail options available for a mid-length rifle that allow me to mount a tactical light and VFG, and maintain the use of the FSB/gas block, for under $200? Or do you think the MI FF T9 may be my best bet for these criteria?

One other thing- if I end up going with a fixed rear sight and no red dot for a while, what are some options (or is the Larue the only one worth buying?)

    Thanks guys

Do you have a complete upper with a delta ring/standard barrel nut, handguard cap and FSB?
What was it about the 9" TRX-E that they said wouldnt work with your upper? AFAIK, it should work with a standard FSB, granted the handguard cap be taken of and the barrel nut replaced with the TRX's proprietary nut.

If you dont want to take off the handguard cap, you could get this.

You will have to cut your delta ring and spring though if you dont want to take the barrel off.

Whoever you talked to is wrong. The 9in TRX Extreme will work with an FSB. The problem is you will need to remove the FSB to install or remove rail sections on the TRX.

This post shows the VTAC TRX installed on a midlength. Its the same handguard just with slots instead of holes.

You could also look into Centurion Arms' upcoming rail system. Theres a thread in the AR General Discussion. You're gonna have to look through it for prices, but I think the pre sale price for the 9in is under $200.

EDIT: Col_Crocs beat me to it.

    .

It was explained to me this way:

The accuracy advantages of a FF HG are minimized with a FSB. To see the benefits of a FF HG, you need to have a low light Gas Block.

Instead, get a MOE Mid-Length for about $35. They just came out. You can easily mount everything you mentioned on the MOE.

I like that. Any more info on them?

It was Troy Industries tech support that told me it was incompatible but it looks like it fits fine to me, so who knows. I really wanted the TRX Extreme but it looks way too difficult to reposition/add/remove rail panels (taking the FSB off to do it in my case) so I've moved on from that. Maybe the Troy TRX Standard or the MI T9?

What difference does having the FSB make? I'd wanted the MOE for a long while until I got my hands on a couple of them. Both were to 'clacky' and/or 'wobbly' for me. I want something that feels like it's welded to the receiver, something that feels substantial and solid.

Yeah My upper receiver will be a complete Del-Ton mid-length straight from the factory, standard.

    =========================

The guys at Noveske told me that the weight of the FSB screws up the harmonics of the barrel and that negatively affects accuracy. On Noveske's accurate rifles, they have low customized gas blocks.

I played with a MOE this past weekend and it was almost too tight. I found it was a pain to get on and off.

Troy makes a nice $160 2-piece quad-rail but it isn't free-floating. I think the "standard" two-piece FF rail is the Omega but it's more than $200.

Maybe the Troy Drop In rail is best for me. It should mount up nice and secure (rattle-free) and be fine to hold my Troy VFG and a small flashlight I would assume, and I can return is to factory setup later if I want. Maybe that's the way to go?
