    =============================

After you remove the BCG, slide the CH while applying slight even downward pressure. It will come out. There are two nubs on each side of the CH that keep it in the channel. When the nubs line up with the openings in the channel, with the slight downward pressure the CH will drop out.

I'd use a a YHM Middy LW rail. After installing several rails from the Omega, Troy MRF, and JP/VTac the YHM went in very easily. It is from my experience the most solid rail I've installed on a rifle. Plus it's just going to cost a little bit over $110.

    Here's 1:

    Here's the $99 version. I have the Specter LW--about 1/2" longer.

Don't be fooled by the low pricetag. I will say it likes the low-profile ladder type rail covers, and XTMs can make it a little "wider" but not uncomfortably. Should you want to use a trim ring, YHM makes two different models. The gas tube will fit through either one, however my carbine length gas has a chopped FSB so the gas block is pinned and entirely protected from impact.

I just don't know if my father is willing/able to pay that much extra for it, nor if I want to ask for that much more.

I definitely love the looks of quad rails...
    You're talking like a poser.

You don't want to spend any more than $400 on an upper to upgrade (or really just bring up to spec) the guts of the gun, but then you're going to spend $200 on a quad rail because you like how it looks?

This reminds me of the guys who buy a $500 car and then bolt on $1,000 in wheels and tires and then install a $1,500 stereo...

If your family will pay for the basic rifle, but not "goodies," then have them buy you a decent upper (not Del-Ton) without the BCG, etc.,, and you buy the BCG and other guts.

I'm still considering the BCM as an option (especially since I don't need/want the factory handguard anyway and it doesn't come with one), I just don't know if my father is willing/able to pay that much extra for it, nor if I want to ask for that much more. Further derailing my own thread, how hard is it to install the charging handle? I know the BCG is easy as pie as I've swapped them out with my friends rifle (switching to and from CMMG .22 kit).

My experience with AR's comes from firing a friends build he completed a few months ago, and about 2. 6+ months of research online. 3. I definitely love the looks of quad rails and the MOE was my first choice until I got my hands on it. It's still in the fold, for sure, and I have a couple of weeks to get my parts laid out etc.
    1. Get it right the first time, otherwise, you just might end up spending twice as much when you realize you want a better rifle.
    2. Where?? DO a bit more here on, especially on critical parts like your barrel, BCG, etc...

    Aaron,

You are getting some good advice here. But I understand we don't all learn the same way.

I was the bone head that built on the cheap. My rifle never failed on me, but I never ran it hard. I never trusted it. It was a learning experience for me. An expensive one.

I put this thing together during the scare and paid twice what I should have for it. You know why? Cuz I had to have an AR! At that time all I knew was what I learned at gun shows.

M&A parts was the vendor I did most of my business with at these shows. You know what the kicker is? Bravo Company was at the show that I bought a good portion of my parts from!

I took a loss and sold the upper, stripped the lower, and added some quality uppers to my collection. Uppers that I run pretty hard.

The beauty of the AR platform, Aaron, is that you can buy piece by piece funds allowing. Don't rush it.

Buy the Bravo upper while it's still $385. Get the MOEs while you are at it. Buy a rifle you never want to sell.

If I had to do it over again, that what I would have done the 1st time. And it would have cost me the same!

Don't be a sucker like me!

Good luck on the rifle Aaron.
    Welcome to the addiction!

Maybe you missed where I said I was going to get the $35 Magpul handguard instead. And yeah quad rails look cool, but I NEED something to mount a flashlight and VFG on in case of the unfortunate event of something going bump in the night in my home. You are the very first person I've heard say Del Ton's stuff is anything less than excellent. I'm not a soldier, LEO, or competitive shooter- hopefully this gun will just be for me to enjoy at the range etc. so I guess I'm not sure how I look like a poser for potentially not building my rifle the same as you would.

And most of my research has been done on ar15.com, here, ar15armory.com, and through countless random websites where I've read up on product reviews etc. I've also talked to friends (some LEO's, some soldiers, some neither) that own AR's about what stuff is good and bad, and talked several times with my gunsmith on the topic.

There is a reason why the guys on the forum are steering you to BCM. The BCM specifications are outstanding and I've yet to see a comparable product match the sale price.

Have you checked out Rob's chart? This thread might be of interest to you.

Here is some more info on BCM.

Personally, I'd invest more in the base rifle. Good luck with your build.

I'm probably going to get the $385 BCM upper from my father and then do the BCG and charging handle myself. That will bring my total in spending to somewhere around the $300 mark (BCG and charging handle, Magpul handguard, MVG, VTac flashlight mount, rear MBUS, I don't think I'm missing anything).

I guess I was caught off-guard because I didn't know there was such a thing as a poser in the AR15 world, unless it was used to describe someone who puts together fake builds online to pretend to own an AR maybe? Sort of like someone going to a Corvette forum talking about how awesome their Corvette is, when he/she is 15 years old and doesn't have a car at all. It seems to me that if you want to build a rifle to mount on your wall, that shouldn't make you a poser- just a frivolous spender, for example
