Hopefully my final post in this thread, I really appreciate all the help guys. I found out today what my Christmas bonus will be (and I'm honestly a bit stunned since I'm only a part-time worker/college student). It's going to be twice what my bonus was last year, and will allow me to get an Aimpoint C3 and a more proven drop-in rail.

I assume that because Troy makes this, it's a great rail- I hear they make very high quality stuff. Look good? And are there any better for the price, like Midwest Industries or anyone? http://store.troyind.com/Drop_In_Mid...rf-d9bt-00.htm I don't want to FF it anymore because I love the stock look as well and may want to revert to that at some point if I get a second AR.

Also, on the Aimpoint C3- the ADM mounts look solid and everything, are they quality pieces as well?

Hey guys, as I stated in another thread I'm getting a bigger Christmas bonus than I thought. The main purpose of this thread is to ask this, what's the best 9" drop-in rail for me other than the DD Omega (just too expensive)? Troy Drop-ins, Midwest Industries? I want the best possible quality but don't really want to break out of the $200 range. All I'm going to do with it is hang a flashlight and VFG on it, no lasers or optics or anything like that. Here are the main two I'm considering:

No need to start another thread. This has essentially been answered here. That said, I really hope you reconsider your looks based deduction of parts. Ive been there in the past and It didnt take long for me to find out what visually balanced my carbine didnt necessarily translate to functional efficiency.

What he said. Spend the money on ammunition, instead.

But if I want a tactical light (so I can SEE what I'm potentially shooting at in a home defense situation) I have an actual need for a rail to mount it on- I keep getting negative feedback on the MOE handguards so this doesn't seem like such a frivolous purchase to me ($160 for a rail), am I wrong?

So what exactly is the negative feedback on the MOEs?
I just bought a middy MOE.

I've heard they can get loose over time, especially with things mounted on them. I guess time will tell! How do they feel right now, by the way?

I guess since I have a high enough budget to get a great lower and a great upper with money to spare, an Aimpoint C3 and top-notch rail are probably in my future. I see no reason to skimp if I don't have to- I don't like having less than I could have had.

Which is why you should either get a really good rail now or run the basic handguard or MOE until you can.
Personally, regardless of whether you have the money now or not, I would choose the latter. Run some rounds through it and then choose a rail. This ensures you end up getting the right rail for your needs.
Now to your light... YOu are getting an upper with a fixed FSB arent you? THe FSB is actually one of the best places to mount a light.

I haven't seen lights mounted to the FSB, I'll start looking into that! Thanks!

I "get" the "money burning a hole in your pocket" thing.

But if you can bank the balance you are getting and/or burn it up in ammo/training, you will be a lot better off in the long term.

The MOE handguards are fine, and cheaper than even a barrel mount. If they work loose, they are polymer, so you could shim them up using epoxy.

I'm currently doing a long-distance build, and here is what I'm getting: (long distance as in "I'm overseas and am shipping parts to my house for an eventual build")

BCM Mid-length, Lightweight, BCM M16 BCG, Magpul MOE forearm, Magpul MBUS rear sight.

And that's it. I will put a light on it sooner or later, and I have an Aimpoint H1 that I will put a riser on so it will bottom third co-witness, plus I'll make my own two point sling. After 28 years of shooting the AR, that's exactly what I need and no more. God, I've bought a lot of junk through the years to arrive at that point.

Wish I had the money back that I wasted getting here.
