Thumbs down Dem Congressman says military service is NOT public service

    Unfrigginbelievable.

    http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/20...public-service

Twenty-four years in the military doesn't count as public service, at least according to Virginia Democratic Congressman Jim Moran.

In a video that's gone viral online, Moran is heard telling a Democratic gathering earlier this month that his opponent, Republican Patrick Murray, is just another unqualified GOP candidate.

"What [Republicans] do is find candidates, usually stealth candidates, that haven't been in office, haven't served or performed in any kind of public service," Moran said. "My opponent is typical, frankly."

The trouble is, Murray is a retired Army colonel with 24 years of service--including combat in Iraq. The idea that such an extensive military record doesn't qualify as "public service" has left a sour taste in Murray's mouth.

"It is unconscionable to me how a member of Congress from a District with so many Veterans, who also sits on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, could make such shameful and offensive comments about the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform," Murray wrote on his campaign blog Friday."This kind of disrespect to our service members not only offends me, but is insensitive to the sacrifices made by our dedicated military families as well."

Dude's either an epic douche or can't choose his words properly.

My guess is he's using "Public Service" as shorthand for domestic political experience. Even if that's the case though, you really gotta question somebody who's trying to claim superior political experience for making such an egregious error in a public statement.

"You should choose me because I have more domestic political experience, even as I stick my foot in my mouth." Yarite.

Conceptually, that's what a congressman is supposed to do.

In practice, yeah it's pretty laughable.

I feel dumber for having seen that.

On the one hand, it was ridiculous for Congressman Moran to take the argument personally, and his rapid discombobulation certainly makes me worry for the future of his district and state.

On the other hand, the douchebag accosting him was acting in obvious bad faith, demanding that Congressman Moran answer for his perceptions of the entire liberal community (which, as I've said before, is about as unified as the conservative community) as though the Congressman himself was the sole force behind the entire "liberal agenda" and the composer of the Obama-era stimulus legislation.

I remember lo these many years ago when Rosie O'Donnel had Tom Selleck appear on her talk show to promote his latest film and spent the entire time demanding he answer every emotionally-charged question she had regarding the NRA, the 2nd Amendment, and Gun Owners in general. That was a dick move, and so was this.

But hey, it's the MTV generation. As long as it makes for interesting television, who cares if we all die a little inside?

I do not know what is worse. This Congresscritter's remarks, or the fact that I am unsurprised that he made them.

But thanks for the heads up. I just donated to his opponent, retired Col. Patrick Murray.

Actually, Col. Murray sounds pretty impressive. He served as a military attache, speaks Russian, and was a Foreign Area Officer at the DIA.
