Remington Rimfire Rifle 597 LS HB for first rifle

What are your comments on this gun? I like the price. I know Remington makes a good gun, but I'm not really finding any reviews on it.

I should add that I want the .22 Magnum.

I haven't kept up 22's in years but I've never heard anything good about Remington 22's other than the 552's. My favorite was the old Remington 550's.

Now I always recommend the Ruger 10-22. It is hard to beat. Tons of options and aftermarket and it has proven itself.

I was looking at the Ruger 10/22 Target too..Would you take that over Remington?

I would prefer the 10/22 if you are willing to go with the .22LR. If you want the .22 Mag the Remington is a good choice. They seem to be about the only .22 Mag semi auto that works reasonably well, though it will probably be picky about ammo (like all .22 Mags).

I'd bet I've recommended 40+ people to get 10-22's and not one has complained yet. I know a couple of people that have tried the Remingtons that weren't happy, weren't happy to the point that they dumped the guns at a Gun Show for a loss.

I did find some reviews on the 10/22 and they were excellent. I'm convinced I'm going to go with one. The 2 that I like are are exclussive to out of state dealers. I'm going to have to jump through a few hoops to get one, but thats easy and ok....

Thanks for you opnions. I appreciate them all.

How big of a difference in accuracy is a 37" to a 38.5? I know longer the barrel the more accurate it is. Is an inch and a half a big difference? All I want to to is target shoot and I have the idea that further the distance the more fun it would be. What distances am I looking at between the two for accuracy? There is a free 100yd range just down the road from me. At 100yds, will it matter?
