Brownells sells a throat erosion gauge. I bought one a few months ago to keep track of the throat erosion in the ARs that I want to keep accurate (3gun rifle and my wifes Noveske). Brother LukeMacGillie told me of them.

    Randall,
Many, many thanks for the feedback. Your consistent thoroughness is appreciated more than you know. You have confirmed many of my suspicions.

    gotm4,
Thanks to you (and Luke) as well for the tip on the throat gauge. It's not obvious how it works. Is it used with a dial indicator or caliper for comparative readings???

You drop the gauge (the part with the lines) into the chamber.
The angled part sticks out through the ejection port.
You read off the lines AT the ejection port or barrel extension face.
As the throat wears, the gauge goes deeper and the throat erosion numbers read higher.
