I certainly understand the desire for the A1 and the simplest setup, but I'd be inclined to go with a flattop and rear sight on the off chance that you were able to find or use an optic.

Along the same lines, I'd use an MI FSB light mount so that you can move your pistol light to the carbine if needed, or again mount a found light if you needed to. I tried the SF light clamp thinking it would let me attach any handheld and found it lacking.
have you run many lights off FSBs on shoot-hot guns?

I have been thinking about the same type of gun. A Colt Commando with an A1/A2 carrying handle would be great. I would go with a Vortex or AAC flash hider. MOE or CTR stock. M4 Side sling mount, Noveske QD plate in the rear and BFG padded sling. I would like a tritium front sight and MOE handguards and a small MOE rail for the option of mounting a light. I wish BCM would sell complete A1 or A2 uppers. A Nodak A1 upper w/o forward assist would be my second choice. There is a build in the retro section right now that fits the bill well.

    Montrala,

That would definitely be my choice for door-kicking duty! Except the VFG. BOO!

I ran my 16" mid-length carbine through MD carbine 1&2 course in September this year with the MI style mount and light (somewhere between 1700-1800 rounds in three days). No problems.

funny.. im currently on the same path. I would like to go with:

    *BCM 11.5 w/ DD RISII Mk18
    - Here is my tradeoff, I too would prefer a FSB, but completely hypothetically speaking, I think its better to have a solid mounted rail than plastic-anything. Who knows, I mean in a chaotic post apocalyptic environment there seem to be randomly burning ground fires everywhere. I would hate for my plastic handguards to get so badly damaged that it would render them useless...I digress.
*DD Fixed BUIS - I will weld those things on.
    *BCM Gunfighter Mod 4
    *BCM BCG
    *Vortex / Rainier XD
    *A5 stock setup with IMOD
*Personally I will be adding the Gear Sector handstop...I freaking love that thing. I got so used to the lip on the end of the Magpul handguard (which my index finger rode on), I placed my GS hadstop close to the end and place it between my index finger and middle finger. It works great for me.

Anyway, happy building and happy holidays.

Hmm. Welding the DD sights on would solve my concerns. Who could do that without screwing it up?

Did your light get too hot to use? Did you use the light during the class?

Not sure what you mean by "shoot-hot", but my #1 gun has an MI FSB mount and a Surefire X200 or X300 lives on the gun. I've not had any issues with either failing.

I think the concern was the light would get too hot.
