6.8spc bolt gun?

I am really wanting a short barrel hunting bolt action (no longer than 18"), and i'm looking for a round that will perform well out of a shorter barrel.

The first cartridge that comes to mind is the 6.8spc, since it was designed for shorter barrels.

Has anyone converted, a .223 (like a stevens 200) over to a 6.8? I'd honestly like to get a ruger compact...but i'm not spending $800 plus glass..

maybe i should just go .308?

Remington built a few 700s in 6.8, but I would honestly just go with something like the 308.

Ruger does the M77 Compact in 6.8. It would benefit from having the chamber reamed to SPEC II deminsions.....otherwise, a great little rifle.

just go .308, My Savage PC with a 14.5 inch barrel is shooting a 130gr Barnes TTSX at over 3000fps, and 168 barnes TTSX at 2,600fps into sub MOA groups. I prefer a 16 inch barrel for hunting I have a old Remington 788 in .308 that was cut down to 16inch, it shoots great, averages just over 1/2 inch 5 shot groups at 100yds. Dont worry about going short with a .308.

Are these hand loaded cartridges? Curious about the 168 TTSX's

I would like a small 6.8 also one day, we used the AR 6.8's in the woods this past week end, like it. I had a chance to see the Seekins mag system in use at Precision Rifle last week and it worked 100%, That on a lightweight stock, 16" .308 midweight barrel would be a nice choice also for the woods.

yes those are handloads, I have had two years loading for this rifle for my daughter both for hunting and local benchrest/precision competitions. Rifle has 600rds through it I have found that the savage has a fast barrel/chamber it averages around 100fps faster then my remington with same loads. It is a great woods gun was carried almost everyday for the past two weeks by a 95 pound girl through the woods and up trees. AR platform is a different story though I think i would prefer the 6.8, .308 feels heavy to me. The 168gr load is 46gr of varget with a cci200 primer in new winchester brass nothing special but it works well and is accurate usually sub 1/2 inch at 100 yds. I have a lot of experience with this rifle and short barreled .308 so I dont mind posting about them. I even took a savage 300wm mag to 16 inch it was accurate but lost a lot of velocity compared to the .308.

Here is a photo of it with the remington 788 for comparison the remington stock has been cut down 2 inches. The remington has been my woods gun for a long time, it is light, handy, and accurate. The savage is also handy, and accurate, but not as light, around 2 pounds heavier. I think the savage is just about perfect for a multi purpose rifle. The Savage is 37 inches OAL, and the Remington is 35 inches OAL.

Whatever came of that? I recall the thread now on 6.8 forums some time ago
