Corbon DPX Hunter 53 gr. Bullet punched through bone(not the spaces) on both sides of her rib cage and kept on flying.

The DPX loads as well as Partitions, Gold Dot / Fusion, TBBC, etc are all good examples of proper bullet selection. I only intended to point out that the typical FMJ or BTHP rounds usually associated with the AR are not ideal or even responsible to use when hunting. Even the loads noted above would be questionable on a bigger bodied deer or an angle other than broadside, especially at longer ranges.

I didn't have a specific 'soft target' in mind when I originally asked the Q. Just a curious question that felt OK to ask. BTW, I am no professional shooter, but I'm not a newb as well. I've been shooting the AR platform for 6 years now. I am always seeking new knowledge on this subject.

Thank all of you for the various responses.

I agree 100%, especially with regards to bullet selection, range, and angles presented.

With an 18" SPR with a 2.5x10 I am good to 600 yards with Black Hills 77gr .223. Past that and I tank. Then again at that range I would want a larger caliber regardless. I am also not a terribly good precision shooter.

Personally? I would only trust myself up to 200 yards, iron sights.

I do most of my shooting between 50 to 100 yards though.

Both the books "Trigger Men" and "Shooter" document 700-800 meter engagements with M-16's and 4x ACOGs.

As far as deer, I've killed two and about a dozen feral hogs with .223. If you use a bonded hollowpoint and place your shots well, the combo works fine for sub 100 yard shots.

What is the proper etiquette? Am I too new here to make a funny?

Does anybody else find it ironic that HITMAN is asking how far out to engage “soft targets”?

With good ammo, and at least a 4X magnification.

I think when I have a bit more experience I will trust myself to make an 800 yard shot, with a 14.5'', and 16.1'' AR variants.

I'm still working on getting hits out to 650, and 700 yards.

And a lot of my shooting 500 yards and in has been with Irons.

I'm trying to be able to get consistent first shot hits out to 500 with Irons, before I focus on extending my range.

For "that type of work", e1, I would choose 7mm Rem Mag. I was just inquiring about the capabilities of a 5.56mm. BTW, My nickname is Hitman because I am a bald white dude, not a professional assassin.

I know Marines who shot successfully on man sized targets at 800 yards with M4 Carbines topped with ACOGs.

A friend of mine kills people at 900m with an SPR. Apparently is you shoot someone in Afghanistan, in the chest, he is likely to be brought to you for treatment/interrogation or die of sepsis. Win.
