Looks like i am finally buying my first AR

I'm new to the forums guys, but i've been lurking for the past month in
hopes that i my countless hours of research will allow me to make the right
choice in terms of buying my first AR15.

After visiting the two closest gun stores in my area, i have come across a
few Ar's and have narrowed my purchase down to 3 different rifles.

The first rifle is a Brand new Stag Arms model 8. The mid length Stag comes with Midwest industries front and ear flip up sights, a pinned M4 style stock, and 1 Pmag 30rnd magazine with the deal. The price is 1150$, but the guy tells me he'll knock off another 100$ if i pay cash up front, which is possible for me.

The second rifle is a used Colt 6920 Hbar w/ a 16" inch barrel, standard hand guards, m4 stock, and whatever stock flash hider it comes with. From what I've gathered, this one is stock with zero modifications to it. The last owner stated that he fired no more than 300 rounds out of it. It looks to be in great condition after inspecting it and doing a function check. Comes w/ 1 20rnd standard mag. He's asking 900$, but will go as low as 850$

The last rifle is a "New in box" Colt 6700 Hbar w/ a 20" inch barrel, fixed stock, A2 carrying handle w/ front/rear sights. Comes with 2 point sling and 1 20rnd mag. This rifle is bone stock as well and looks to be in great condition after an inspection and function check. He's asking for 1150$.

It's been extremely difficult for me to make up my mind here. I would love to get the mid length colt w/ the 16 inch barrel, but it's used and i have no idea as to whether or not it's a risky buy. It's seems to be in good condition, and the guy selling it has a great reputation among customers, but I'd rather get something new.

I've pretty much decided on buying the 20" inch barrel version, as i want the extra accuracy, velocity and toughness. This weapon is gonna be my target shooting, plinking, small game hunting and secondary home defense weapon.

On the other hand, i want a mid length AR more than anything, but the weapon i have access to is used. I don't have any experience with used AR's. The Stag Model 8 Piston Ar seemed like a good solution, but i want my first AR to be a DI.

My other home defense weapon is a High-point carbine which is chambered in .40 S&W, and has been an extremely reliable weapon for me.

Help me out guys, i'd really appreciate it. I don't wanna end up with buyers remorse. Lastly, i have spent a decent amount of time checking out the great M4 chart. Thanks in advance. I'm so tired and can barely function at this point because i have spent to much time researching Ar's :

Order an upper from BCM, buy a complete lower locally or order it too.

You would probably still be under 1k, and it would be new.

Out of the three choices you listed, I would pick up the Colt 6920 - even though it's used, it probably wasn't run too hard, especially since you say it looks to be in great condition.
I wouldn't touch the Stag for the price listed.

Personally, though, +1 on J-Dubb's advice - buy a BCM upper and lower and you'll never regret it.

By the way, you referred to "mid length" a couple of times. Just to make sure we're on the same page, mid length refers to the gas system (as in m4 vs. mid length gas system). Not all manufacturers offer mid length gas systems, but almost all offer the m4 gas system. Personally, I like the BCM Middy.

I would rather order an upper from BCM or DD, but as previously stated out of those get the 6920.

My mistake if i said something about mid length vs full length that wasn't correct.

I'll take the advice and stay away from the Stag, so thx for that advice. Also, i have thought about ordering a separate upper and lower and then putting the rifle together, but i haven't talked with my gun dealer as far as his policy on ordering parts.

On the other hand, the Colt 6920 is what i really want. I'm no expert in terms of AR's, but i did inspect the weapon pretty thoroughly, and failed to find even a minimum number of scratches or dings anywhere on the stock, barrel or carry handle.

I asked the shop owner if he could strip down the 16" inch 6920 so that i could check for various things like M4 feed ramps, properly staked gas key, and whether or not the inner working of the rifle were chrome lines and what not.

The gas key looked like it was a perfect staking job. It looked professionally done. The M4 feed ramps looked pristine as if they were machined to a precise spec. No rust or carbon buildup or any other tell tale signs of wear and tear.

As far as the gas system goes, i guess i assumed Colt uses mid length gas systems for it's 6920 series of carbines. I'm no expert though.

Last, most of what I'll be doing with the gun will be short range plinking on my friends property. The woods where i'll be shooting are extremely dense, and there is hardly any areas that allow long range shooting or hunting. The best visibility is on average 25-125 yards if i were to estimate.

Also, i forgot to mention one thing. The 6920 has the regular M4 4 to 6 position retractable stock on it, but he also had a short fixed A1 stock that he would he would to me as well. It looks just like the fixed stock on all M16's/AR15's, but it's a bit smaller.

So if i buy the 6920, i'll have 2 stocks. By the way, i live in CT, so All stocks must be fixed and if retractable they must be pinned.

I'll do some research on BCM's website.

A final note though. When i was able to handle and shoulder the 6920, it felt so balanced in my hands. It felt so perfect against my shoulder, and the Iron sights were perfect. I kind of fell in love with it lol. I really did like the 20" inch Colt as well, but it was a bit heavier and seemed a bit big for close range work.

I hope AR's can survive the elements, because i need a rifle that can handle harsh winter conditions while being carried the woods all day. I don't plan on throwing it in the dirt, but i do worry about having it out in the cold moist air all day, and hope that it won't be a problem.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Dude, our issue Colt M4s were beat to death, older than dirt, and had pretty high round counts and as long as they were MILDLY lubed and fed with good mags and ammo ran forever and without fail. Remember the same company that makes our issued weapons makes that 6920. Colt makes great shit. What they do not make is a mid-length anything, so you might want to do a bit more reading, as I think you don't really know what "mid-length" means...

Just buy the friggin' 6920, it's a great price and unless someone cleaned the barrel with a steel cleaning rod the wrong way for an hour straight I'm sure it'll be more accurate and run longer than you can. I think you're over thinking things a little bit.
