No, AR's can't take cold weather or moist air in the harsh winter conditions of the North East, hopefully we'll never get into a armed conflict with heavily armed grumpy muslims in a mountainous and cold place like, I don't know, Afghanistan...

ETA: Just put a little CLP on the exposed steel parts and you'll be fine.

Yes, the AR can take the colder temperatures. I'd go with the 6920 as well.

As far as the cold goes, i know that our troops are currently fighting in extremely cold climates, and at very high altitudes as well. I fully understand that Colt is who makes and has been making our Military rifles for quite a while now, but i wasn't sure if civilian versions of the M4 are able to handle the same brutal elements that the military versions do.

I'm trying to find every bit of info that i can so that i can make the best informed decisions here.

Also, I'm mainly buying this weapon so that i can train ahead of time before shipping off to boot camp, which is 3 months from now, and after i earn the college credits i need.

I need to sharpen my skills before i get there. I'll find my self in that same shithole sooner than later. Thanks for your service.

The civilian Colt is up to the same standard as military issued weapons. Seriously - buy that 6920. Great gun for a great price.

I think you should learn a little more about carbine vs. mid length gas systems and decide for sure which you would prefer before making your choice. You won't go wrong with either. But you may decide you would clearly prefer one over the other. For myself, I decided I wanted to go mid-length, which narrowed down choices a little. Also learn more about FSB sights vs. floating hand guards with attached front sights. Big difference there in terms of versatility that you should be schooled up on.

You can order an upper with mid-length gas system directly from BCM and have it shipped to your house. BCM is considered comparable to Colt in terms of quality. Then choose lower of your choice from BCM, other online source, or locally.. put 'em together and have a very high quality, mid-length set-up.

Don't rush into your choice, you have more to learn and understand in order to make a reasoonably well-informed decision. If you don't know enough about the various features to consider, then take the time to learn what you need to know before making your decision. Then you'll be making a choice based on a solid understanding of what you are choosing and why.

I am gonna buy it. I've always wanted a Colt as it is. But I'd like to get an upper in a higher caliber so that i can legally hunt deer in my state. If it's possible to buy either a 6.5, 6.8 or .308 upper and attach it to the 6920's lower receiver, than that would be bad ass.

I'm gonna have to wait two weeks because of the background check. I'm tired of waiting. If there was a way to order an upper and lower and have them both delivered to my house i would do. Is there any way to legally get around the two week wait?

That would be to good to be true.

    Colt 6920!

Get a good look at it first - check for signs of corrosion, ensure it has the stock auto carrier, etc.

Good point... any used AR (branded a Colt or otherwise) could be a mix of God knows what various parts from who knows where. If you're going to spring for the used 6920 (as well as any used AR of uncertain history and origin), be sure of what you're getting.

Yes, you can put most any AR upper on most any AR lower.

No, you can't legally receive an AR lower without it going through a local FFL. If your local regulations require a 2 week wait on taking possession of the lower, so be it. The upper can be sent directly to you.
