If you didn't (or don't) have a .308/7.62 NATO rifle, which one would you be asking Santa for and why?
The question is posed so broadly just help me start the information gathering process. In other words, I don't know what I don't know.

I have a LMT MWS. But... Depending on what my use would be, FAL,M1A, LaRue OBR, LWRCi Repr. These all could work well. But then my MWS works really well for me. Whatever you decide, probably won't be cheap.
I still have a soft spot for the FAL but I am looking at the LMT MWS, LaRue OBR, FN SCAR 17...
Right now I like my DSA FAL

For function and cost effectiveness, an FAL. For looks, an M-14 or similar.

Oh yeah I forgot the Scar heavy was out. I wish you could still get good FAL's that were not too expensive.
Hk 91 gets my nod.

RE, you don't say for what you'd use a 308-chambered rifle, but I'll assume that like me, you don't plan to take the gun into harm's way and will use it mostly for target practice, plinking, and perhaps the occasional hunt. If that's the case, then I'd recommend the DPMS-based AR in 308/7.62. (The reason I say "DPMS-based" is because the Remington and Bushmaster ORC versions are essentially the same animal with different hide.) Relatively inexpensive, readily available, and comes in several configurations, one of which is likely to fit the bill for what you have in mind. A flattop version gives you almost limitless flexibility in optics and back up irons options--an important consideration for those of us with eyes past their 4th decade. Mine is plenty accurate enough for me, and it's actually been more reliable than FALs I've owned. It's digested everything I've fed it, from Russian steel case to milsurp to my own reloads. I wouldn't consider my DPMS as durable a gun as the FAL nor as accurate as a Larue or Knight's 308, but for the price it's tough to beat.
It's an affordable way to get into 308 with a reasonably easy gun to use.
