Ditto on the one piece coated Dewey rods. (Tipton puts out some good products, but I've not used their cleaning rods.)

A 30" rod is ideal for any AR up to 18" and will work for a 20" if the muzzle device is not too long. A longer rod will work but will flex, which is not desirable.

    Cleaning Rod

I use the "Bore Snake" for in the field and the "Otis" for a good cleaning. Otis has a good kit that is compact and has all the need attachments.

    OP,

Did you order a bore guide to go with your Dewey Rod?

Also, any good copper solvent such as Hoppes Benchrest, Shooter's Choice or others will do the job.

Be careful, because one time when I cleaned my rod it went off!

    Ditto!
Your wife is like a new gun... sooner or later you are going to want to shoot them both.

    Kenny,
A jag is to hold a patch tight against the sides of the bore. A bore guide is to guide the rod over the action to prevent dumping junk into the action and to help keep the rod going straight into the chamber.

Looks like you need to do a little "home work" by doing a few Google searches for "bore cleaning", "rifle cleaning", etc. or you will be asking itsy-bitsy questions through the whole cleaning process. You need to take the initiative to get a basic understanding and then, ask specific questions.

    But maybe it's just me...

ive been using a plain aluminum 3 piece rod from some kit i have (i use 2 pieces for my 16"), brass brush, white cotton patches, and plain old hoppes #9. its cleaned everything ive ever owned just fine. i clean every rifle/pistol/shotgun after every firing, regardless of shooting 1 or 1000 rounds.

i dont care what anyone says about 'overcleaning.' nothing i use is damaging. theyre my guns, and if i want them spotless, they will be spotless. i always know they are stored clean and oiled, and are ready to go whenever i want to use them again.

Check out the "Basic AR Cleaning" stickied thread at the top of this forum. This will give you a good idea of what to do and what tools you need.

Hoppes #9 is not really the best for cleaning copper residue out of a barrel.
