    First Precision Rifle

For about the past 6 months I have been lusting after a Precision Bolt gun. For the most part I know nothing about bolt guns other than the basic stuff.

While I'm not looking for a high dollar rifle like a AI, GAP, or any of the other high profile precision builders. I'm just looking for a rifle to put holes paper at 500+ yards and develop those skills with said rifle.

I have been seriously considering the Remington 700 SPS AAC SD, and adding a Surefire comp (Can't have a can in my state), Bipod, and some paint. I have yet to decide on what glass to get, but I have been looking at the Millet LRS.

Would I be wrong in going with this rifle? What can I expect performance wise out of it? Will this be a decent base platform that I can improve upon if I choose to do so?

    Get a better optic.

If you're glass cost less than your suppressor then you are doing it wrong.

At $795 (according to the Millet web site) that's more than I'm paying for the rifle.

My glass for my AI was about the same price as the rifle.

    A) That's not the going street price

    B) It is not a quality sight. Spend $300 on a Weaver tactical or a SWFA Super Sniper, save money, AND have a better scope.

    C) I'd look at Savage, Howa, and Winchester also.

I'm no expert by any means at all, but I shoot well with a Ruger Model 77 Mark II and a Leupold scope... I like it better than my Remmington 700... I think it shoots better, but maybe I'm just used to it.

Just throwing it out there, I know a lot of people that are thinking of their first precision rifle jump straight to a Model 700 because they haven't seen any alternatives.

The Ruger should be priced similarly to the 700, seems the trend on 'Broker right now, anyways...

But like I said, I'm no professional. Not at all. I just thought you might like other options...
    Fact of life:

Although the EAGLE may soar proudly through the skies, it is very rare for the Weasel to be sucked into a jet engine.

Remington is fine and the best option. Dont be cheap with the glass! Remington has the most aftermarket options and the action can grow and develop with you. Its one of the easier actions to true and rebarrel. Lots of great stock options as well.

Dont rule out used rifles at this point as they can offer some great value while you figure it all out. If you get hooked it will not be long before you have a few $4000 sticks lying around.

Head over to Snipers Hide and start learning. Like here a lot of great info.

The OD of your barrel won't allow the SF brake on without having it turned down. There are other brakes on the market that will thread right on, though.

The stock on the AAC is a piece of garbage, so plan on upgrading that. The supplied floorplate/ trigger guard is plastic, so plan on replacing that.

Now you're in the territory for a Savage 10 FCP McMhttp://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/43534 or 10 FCP HS precision https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...ducts_id/43532, or 700P LTR http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...s_id/411537493.

Ive always been told you want to spend atleast what you spent on the rifle on your optic. And you can go wrong with remington.

I think this advice is probably the most repeated advice on glass I've ever seen...and also the most misleading.

There are DOZENS of scopes that will hold zero and work for plenty of people, for FAR less than their rifles might cost.

To suggest that a Leupold Mk4 will only work on a 700P, but won't work on a AI AE used the same way, is just silly. I've seen super expensive BR rigs with Tasco glass...and those guys can shoot FAR tighter groups than an most people can with any NF or USO.

Not everyone with a nice rifle needs a FFP scope that has super-fantastic light transmission if they shoot at known distances during the day.

Shooters just need to do the research on what features they need, and what reputable choices are available to them.
