Flat Krylon paint works great. They have tan, brown and green.
I put down tan over the entire rifle and used a piece of plastice folage stuff (fern I think) that I picked up on a trip to a chick hobby store with my wife. I used that to over spray with green and brown.

I too have used sponges(sea sponge type in the hardware section at Wally world). It works real good for a random pattern. Cut the sponge into 2"-5" pieces, spray the shit out of them and press on the rifle, spray them each time. Be sure to mask off all moving parts, muzzle and sights. Spray whatever Color you want for a base coat first. I use only krylon because it's cheap, easy to get, easy to fix, remove, and change camo in different areas. Also a mess laundry bag makes a good stencil, just lay over the rifle and spray in random patterns. Remember don't think about the pattern you want to make, it should be as random as possible to be effective. As said before local vegetation works great too.
