Most basic AR you've observed at any type of training class

Many times photos or vids from classes show folks with fairly complex carbines. Obviously the carbines aren't that complex but have a fair amount of accessories on them, RDS, lights, rails, etc.

    What's the most basic set-up anyone's seen?

    What brand was it?

How did the user fair compared to the more equipped users?

What was the class (local shooting group, LE, professional, etc.)?

Thank you for satiating my curiousity.

One of the most basic one is my own. I'm an instructor at USTC and I want to show my students that you first have to get good with the basics so you know what to modify if anything.

The rifle is a school issued Bushmaster AR-15, I put on an A1 style carrying handle, iron sights only (100m zero), stock trigger group, homemade tubular nylon one point sling, stock birdcage for the flash hider. No foregrip.

As an instructor I'm going to have students show up with basic guns so I want them to see what is capable with proper training. Also if I can demonstrate a drill at a particular pace with a bone stock gun then it lends a little more cridibility to the drill and the times since I didn't rely on compensators, optics, or aftermarket trigger groups.

I actually like shooting with iron sights, it is becoming a lost skill for the masses.

I have run a BM A2, 20" with standard plastic furniture rifle through 2, one day classes.

There was one goofy looking kid with glasses running old school LBE and a plane old 6920, no mods. I was waiting for him to shoot himself or someone else at first glance. Turns out he was incredibly proficient with mag changes and was very accurate using Iron sights at all distances. He was giving everyone with RDSs a run for their money, even with the shoot on the move, turn and shoot drills.

I've seen numerous a1 and a2 setups ran.

I am a big fan of the "he looked goofy, but then kicked my ass" stories.

In the larger classes I have seen there have been a few shooters who run irons.

If you are worried about being at an immediate disadvantage, dont be. It is all about how proficient you are with what you have. Not "I just strapped this on and now I can hit what I am aiming at".

I was in a class with a Virginia State Trooper who was using his issued Colt LE 6921.

VASP does not allow any optics or white lights on their issue carbines. He used a modified Harries technique for the low light aspect.

He did great with what he had, but he was definitely handicapped in the low light segment.

The beauty of that plan is its simplicity. BRILLIANT!

I shot a 3-gun match with a park ranger this year that ran a 20" Colt A2 and he did very well. The cool thing about him is that he practiced taking good cover and getting accurate hits with virtually zero gaming.
