In looking for a reliable first rifle is getting a midlength rifle an easy way to improve reliability? Or should other aspects of the AR (like the BCG) have higher priority when trying to choose a reliable gun.

The midlength is definitly better than the CAR as far as gas systems go. If you look around a bit, you can find a comparison chart that shows the numerical, quantifiable differences between the CAR, Middy, and Rifle gas system pressure curves .
which would be more important in overall rifle reliability though....a CAR length rifle with above average BCG parts/QC or a rifle that has a midlength upper and average BCG parts/QC?
i guess i'm just not too sure on what the most common "weak point" on AR15 style rifles go.
The peak pressure on the CAR is almost twice what the Midlength peak is, so that is what I would say the biggest possible weak point is, and the easiest to fix. Unless you want a <14.5" barrel, there is no good reason to want a CAR system.
Rifle is the most reliable, next being intermediate, then midlength and then CAR.

We had quite a long thread here a while back that got around to the mid length systems.
I'll see if I can find it. It was a very good thread, I learned a great deal. In particular barrel erosion near the gas ports.
EDIT:
Found it, it's the sticky on bolt failures:

Very long thread but well worth the read.
Well i want a 16" rifle and have seen chromelined RRA's, Stags and S&Ws all for around the same price.
The RRA is the only one offered in midlength but the S&W and Stag i've been told have better quality in the BCG so i'm stuck on which way to go.
I guess i could get the RRA and then down the road spend the hundred or whatever on an LMT BCG and have the best of both worlds right? once you get a car there's no way to make it a middy right?
Grant has some mid length barrels/uppers in the works for a good deal. I'd ask him what his ETA on those is.
Sabre Defense has good high quality Mid length Gov't profile barrels floating around. CMMG has several options to pick from. I really like the BCM middy gun that I have. Good bolt carrier groups are easy to find now thanks to folk like BCM and Grant.
Buy your Rock River from someone like Grant or me.
We give the upper a good once-over, correct the staking and recommend other upgrades right from the start.
A properly staked Rock River carrier with a better extractor spring and a crane o-ring is good to go.
The biggest complaint on Rock River barrels is that they are so heavy.
I offer Rock River barrels and uppers re-profiled into about any weight/profile you want.
