The original post is precisely why I value this site. I visit a few times a day, read a lot, and post seldom. IMO, it is the atmosphere, and the membership, that make this such a valuable resource.
While I'm not a fan of emoticons or whatever, I do think they have a vital function in that this is not a face-to-face communication and there is a lot lost without tone and body language. A comment or suggestion with an emoticon can help shape the message and can take a percieved harsh edge off the statement.

I know i stepped on some toes when i first joined, but at the time i thought it was just another forum. what a great post and i agree all new members should have to read it. If i had somthing like this when i joined i could have kept myself from looking like as ass.
I really dont think many new members have a clue as too the amount of expertise that is available on here for free.

I like this thread. I only read it because some one linked it in another thread. I think Sharing this information with the whole membership is an excellent idea.
I stay out of GD because I find myself getting into discussions I would rather not be involved in. Sometimes it is like a train wreck and I "can't help it" I think moving GD to the bottom of the page was a good idea. I did that with our voice mail at work. My extension is at the end of the list instead of the beginning. The goal was to avoid unnecessary messages! Moving GD has kept my eye from seeing provocative posts and responding when I should know better.
