DocGKR, good feedback. Is that because the powder burns out at 16 inches and you do not gain any velocity after 16?

Although it depends on the load and propellant, we generally don't see significant velocity gain after 16" For example:

SSA 2nd gen 115 gr SMK OTM w/cannelure, 5 shot averages:

20” barrel: ave vel = 2561 fps; 10 fps extreme spread

    16” barrel: ave vel = 2525 fps; 18 fps extreme spread -- lost 36 fps from 20"

    12.5” barrel: ave vel = 2384 fps; 12 fps extreme spread -- lost 141 fps from 16"

    10” barrel: ave vel = 2265 fps; 27 fps extreme spread -- lost 119 fps from 12.5"

    7.5” barrel: ave vel = 2035 fps; 27 fps extreme spread -- lost 230 fps from 10"

SSA's training ammo is "only" $0.80 per bang. Not cheap, but compared to $1 per you get one free round for every five bangs.

Here is another good option for 6.8 ammo. Price is good brass is good and accuracy is much better then the Rem. UMC

Reports on the Rem UMC ammo has been a pretty consistent 3 moa...not very impressive. The G2G ammo is about 1.5 moa. And it is a little cheaper.

Now if you don't reload, you could sell the brass from the G2G ammo for .35$ ea. +shipping. All day long!

so break it down like this... for 500 rounds
    377.50 cost of ammo
175.00 money recouped from brass sales
202.50 total cost for 500 rounds
    or
    $.41 per round

Same thing could be applied to the SSA training round.

With a little extra work you CAN shoot the 6.8 pretty affordably.
Good quality 5.56 ammo costs close to $.40 per round.

    Just sayin

I don'tmean to be argumentative, but that is a false comparison because you can also pick up your brass fromthe 5.56 and although more common, it still has value, as does your time. Also, Ihave been able to get xm193 for .35 in my area, although perhaps that will not last.

Understood and valid points...although for me i do not consider fmj "quality" ammo...but that is personal opinion I guess.

What are you paying for 5.56 ammo with OTM bullets?
what is the going price for once fired 5.56 brass? $.10 ?? I have no idea...since I don't even own a 5.56 anymore

Regardless though... you have to admit 6.8 is getting much more affordable to shoot. And it will never be as cheap as 5.56, and expecting it to, will only lead to dissapointment.

This is a pre 64 Win M70 270 with Pac Nor barrel and Borden stock

It weighs 8.75 pounds with scope, bi-pod, and sling.

In 2008 and 2009 combined, I killed 8 mule deer between 329 and 510 yards. 130 gr ballistic tip. I aim for the front 1/3 of the body. Half go bang flop, half run 50 feet and drop.

When young men tell me that the 270 is obsolete, I tell them, "Not obsolete with me."

Here's an example of something wrong with stores. Ordered the ammunition yesterday and was informed today that the order could not be fulfilled due to "depletion of inventory". Apparently Cheaper than Dirt applies to their inventory management system as well.
