I got my 516 in today and I was wondering if it matters how far back or forward I mount the sight. Is it personal preference? I did notice the closer to my eye the smaller the recticle and vice versa.

I have an Eotech XPS 2-0. You can mount it anywhere on your rail that you want. These sights, and most like it have "unlimited eye relief" which means that they work well any distance from your eye. Most people do advise either mounting it entirely on your flat top receiver, or your rail. But not mount it so it is connected to both. Hope that helps. In the end though, you need to experiment with where it works best for you.
Easy answer:
As far forward on the upper receiver rail as you can without bridging the gap with the mount.
That will give you generous head position and leave enough rail to mount a magnifier and a BUIS.

+1, that's the nature of the holographic reticle. That said I've experimented with moving mine forward and back along the rails. Right now I've got it fairly far back (towards me) on the rail. This is ONLY because I still have a heavy profile 16" barrel mounted and she felt REALLY nose heavy with the EOTech mounted forward.
However, I prefer the optic be pushed out so that the battery compartment is above my free float rail, but is attached to the upper receiver. I feel this yields the least amount of obstruction by the body of the optic.
an Eotech is wide so I tend to mount mine as far forward as possible to not interfere with operating the bolt release with a palm slap.
my Aimpoint T-1, I mount further back though as I find the reticle is sharper to my eyes the closer I see it.
Erik Lund has a different take altogether and I've spoken to him about this and generally agree with him but only on the 30mm Aimpoints as there is little to no room "inside" the T-1 to look around in. I tend to look around this sight with both eyes open but still mount it further back due to reasons mentioned above.

never push a wrench...
in stead of starting a new thread I figure Ill just continue with my next question on this one.
Whats the easiest way to sight this thing in at 50 yrds? Start at 25 then go to the 50?
Send it to me, I will mount it, Zero it and tell ya all about it.....
Start with a Borelight then take it out. Get it on paper, then zero at actual range. I like the 100 zero, but the Fire and Forget is 200.

I just zero it at 25m (POI about 1 cm low POA) then go out to 100 for POA=POI.
