    Leupold Mark AR Opinions

To those of who who have them or have had them do you think that they offer good value for the money. I have access to up to 1000 yards and would like to try some paper punching at 500-600 yards with my RRA varmint. I am also considering a Nikon M-223 since I have had such great luck with a monarch I have.

Thank you I did see those threads. I would like more up-to-date info. Hopefully, someone has used it over the course of the winter and could offer up some thoughts?

I put a 3-9X MilDot on my M14 this fall. It has yet to see any real hard use, but initial impressions have been quite good. Glass is nice, build quality is good, reticle is nice and crisp, and eye relief is very good. The only issue I had with it was that they eye focus ring can come loose, when this happens the ocular will move about causing the reticle to move, for a second there I thought the scope wouldn't hold zero. This seems to be the same design on their VXI-VXIII scopes and not only specific to the Mark AR. Just something to be cautious about. The turret are 1/2 MOA which is maybe a little less precise than I would like, but also probably what keeps the price point down. The clicks are less sharp and precise than on the Vari-X Tactical I have on my bolt gun, but are still discernible. Whether the scope is water proof with the turret caps off or not is unknown to me. It looks as though it is a two piece tube.

Obviously this scope is a compromise. I think Leupold really tried to make it the best quality they could for the target price point. It isn't a Mark4 but then again, it is 1/3 the price. Compared to other sport scopes it has a lot of good features. It is backed by a solid company, made in the USA, and offers many of the features I wanted. Time will tell how it performs but I feel a lot more confident with it than I do some Chinese made crap.

Now I'm looking for a scope for my SPR build. I would not hesitate a second to go with another MarkAR except for the fact that I really want something in the 2-8x range. This has me looking at the Nikon M223 but they are not available with a Mil-Dot reticle. Those scopes are made in the Philippines which does not inspire a huge amount of confidence but otherwise look quite nice.

I think the MarkAR will serve you will as long as you understand that you are buying a $350 sport scope and not a $1500 hardened tacticool scope.

Please keep us/me informed on how you like it. As I mentioned, I am seriously looking at the 2-8x.

What reticle did you end up with?

I went with the Nikoplex since I could dial it in. I looked at the BDC as well but decided to not go with it since a lot of my shooting will not be with 55gr. I know where you can get a great deal on the 2-8, the guy I got it from has one left in stock. I looked through them both at a yard sale sign that was 300 yards away. Both where very nice, clear glass and all that. Send me a PM if you like.

I probably will not get to sight it in until the weekend due to inclement weather here.

I'm also looking to get a nikon m-223 1-4. I'm not sure if I should go with the point blank reticle or the BDC reticle. The BDC reticle is a midway exclusive item and is not shown on the nikon website. Any suggestions?

A lot of people do not like the 3moa dot on the Point Blank reticle. Also the BDC is handy for quick range adjustment. I myself would go with the BDC on the 1-4. You might loose some speed, but you would gain more capability IMHO.

Actually, I haven't ruled this scope out.
