    are all Extractors created equal?

greetings all. I just found this place this week after taking Pat's most excellent carbine class recently.

I would first like to say that the m4 comparison chart rocks. Thanks a ton for making that.

I'm having a barrel built, and the builder is including a stripped bolt that is headspaced to the barrel. The bolt has been MPI'd but being stripped, I'm going to have to find an extractor to go with it.

I recall Pat railing against some extractors in a previous class that were likened to butter, as I recall. But others have told me that all extractors are pretty much the same metal and hardened the same. [edit: In case that's not clear, I'm not questioning Pat's statement. I just don't know if the extractor in question was bad due to wear, or bad because it was built with crappy material]

I'm also familiar with the differences springs/inserts already, so I'd just like to know if there is a difference in the extractor itself, what do I look for and where would I go to buy quality?

Also, if there is a difference, consider adding a line for the extractor to your comparison chart.

    warm regards,

99% of the time, extractors come with bolts. I would double check that. If not, BCM makes a mil-spec extractor.

    thanks C4

I did have a short discussion about it when i ordered the barrel, as he was warning me that he only sold the stripped bolts and i would have to put it together myself. I was somewhat surprised, as you say 99% (heck, probably a lot more than that) are sold complete.

this could be a stupid question but BCM is who? bravocompany?

I concur the BCM extractor is excellent (one of if not the very best).

    BCM = Bravo Company Manufacturing
Chief Armorer for Elite Shooting Sports in Manassas VA
Chief Armorer for Corp Arms (FFL 07-08/SOT 02)

Stripped bolt usually means no firing pin, cam pin or retaining pin.

    BCM is Bravo Company USA.

You probably missed that part of the lecture because you were otherwise occupied with yourholster falling off; then the holster breaking and dumping your pistol on the deck next to the nest of Black Widow's.....
There are grades of extractors, firing pins and FCG parts.
That extractor we passed around at a previous class has less then 200 rds downrange, but it was as round and soft as a...I dunno', fill in your fav saying.
Those parts meeting a standard are more expensive. Makers who don't have to meet a standard may not always use what is best (as Paul Buffoni does) but rather what is available.

Contact Paul at Bravo Company. He will set you up properly.
