For what it may be worth, the extractor Pat is referring to was RRA purchased from PK Firearms and was my second replacement for that day. The original one came with the bolt from EagleFirearms.net and the two replacements were new RRAs from PKF. All three were smoother than a baby's butt. Not trying to trash RRA or PKF--this is just my experience.

An extractor spring from tacticalsprings.com and new extractor insert remedied the problem temporarily (just a couple hundred rounds). After the second new extractor failed, Josh replaced it with one of his extractors (Colt if I'm not mistaken). I continued the rest of the class (another ~800 rounds) without any issues.

You probably missed that part of the lecture because you were otherwise occupied with yourholster falling off; then the holster breaking and dumping your pistol on the deck next to the nest of Black Widow's.....
heh, yeah. you have no idea how much i wanted to shoot that spider in the face.

abnk, that's fascinating. thanks for the info.

thanks for all the suggestions, guys. it looks like BCM has a bolt kit with the springs, insert, gas rings, and extractor all in a single package, shot peened and at a reasonable price. i've had it in my shopping cart on their website since mid-afternoon and i'm just tryign to decide what other toys i can afford before i hit buy

Can't say I can recognize any particular brand of extractor, one from another. Nor have I been able to note one brand failing more than another-- mostly because I've probably only seen maybe a dozen fail and did not have good info as to what brand.......

Except for one gun I saw this spring.... it had bad parts even I have never seen. How about:

A cast extractor? I did say CAST. I thought I had seen it all in the heyday of crappy AR parts, circa 1985. Gas tubes made from what looked like break line, etc.

A two-piece, welded aluminum charging handle.... oh yeah. Front part cast as I recall, rear part machined, fitted together and welded on one side only. I have it around here somewhere.
