I don't have an apples to apples comparison, but it is a very noticeable difference between the two.

The carbine is basic with an A2 and MOE hand guards. My middy has VTAC TRX extreme and an RVG.

Both have government profiles. I thought that would give the middy an advantage. My middy has a smith vortex FH, so that can't help much either.

If I may... I think those folks who are making a comparison between the Carbine length gas system and the Mid-length gas system as far as weight and balance... are talking about the longer hand-guards and having accessories farther out toward the muzzle of their rifle. This would change the center of gravity and the balance of the rifle, just like changing the fulcrum on a lever. Not to mention longer hand-guards have slightly more weight. At least that is my take on the matter.

I think you are blaming the wrong thing entirely. Its nothing to do with the middy system making it feel nose heavy to you - its got more to do with the rest of the accessories. If you put a carbine barrel in your current middy setup....it would still be nose heavy.

Not really. Noveskse has been making mid lengths for a few years now. Markm and I shoot his mid length regularly and it functions as well as any carbine I have fired thus far.

Gas port size isn't really rocket science. One just has to devot a little time to it and I believe that BCM has bee doing that.

On another thread a poster was comparing BCM to DD middies and made the statement that BCM had more experience with gas port sizes, etc. I'm not disputing that fact nor am I wanting to start a contest between BCM and DD, but that poster's statement says to me that there is still some experimentation going on with the mid-length system.

I do see advantages to the mid-length system, but I still have reservations that it hasn't been fully tested.

I bought a BCM 16" middy upper when building my second rifle. If you were to run a railed system and keep the fsp you get more real estate. I'm short with short arms so the extra room for hand palcement is negligable. I guess mine shoots a little softer, I guess the difference is mostly scientific

I wouldn't necessarily convert an existing carbine (which actually means rebuilding the upper with mostly new components and possibly using a different buffer.) That seems like wasted money and effort.
However, I would not buy a new upper with a 14.5" barrel or longer with a carbine-length gas system. Nothing bad about a carbine, but mid-length (if properly built,) is better.
