The NIKON monarchs have served well on rimfires and are decent glass. Not sure how they'll handle recoil, but I'd imagine they'd be ok. With this said, don't fool yourself into thinking that the said optic is being recommended for serious/self defense use.

Scopes for a AR-15 are certainly in abundance. The $200 price range is more of a starting point. The gun shows will have the Chinese knock offs of the ACOG and EOTECH as well as others. I think you will end up being very disappointed. You will have end up buying junk that falls apart and can not hold zero, etc.
I would save up and buy some quality glass. I did and am very grateful I did and bought a ACOG. At the high level AIMPOINT, ACOG, EOTECH, nightforce are all great glass each for a little different activity. The price range on these is $700-$2000.
You may want to also look the BUIS sights, which are very effective out to 400+ meters.
