Wipe off the BCG with a rag and wipe out the upper with a rag. Hit the chamber real quick and put it back together. In all about 5 minutes worth of effort.

I'll take an out of the box rifle, zero, test 10-15 magazines to go with it, and consider it gtg if no issues. Properly mount accessories, clean and lube for storage/transportation. It will take about 800 rds and and 1.5 hrs
I vote that this is a more realistic testing method.

This is closer to how I test a weapon, but I keep the round count lower and only test 5-10 mags usually.

Thanks. As time goes on, I have become less concerned about getting my weapons "white glove clean". I suspect that scraping every last bit of carbon out of a weapon is more destructive than cleaning in the method you describe.

We were also taught in BCT to run another patch through the weapon a day or two later after the initial cleaning and while I'm sure it's not absolutely necessary (in a chrome-lined bore), I haven't been able to break the habit.

If your carbine can spit out 500rds of Tula, then it should be GTG.

Trust me, I know. I am old school Army Infantry and I was taught to clean them white glove and all that nonsense. Fortunately I grew up and started listening to more knowledgeable people.

I now try and pass that on to the "indoctrinated" ones so they too will see the light.

My old Drill SGT would have a heart attack if he saw how I cleaned my SR15 tonight. 5 mins and it was done. Quick wipe down of the BCG, boresnake and lot of Slip 2000. Good for another 1000 rds.

I don't have a set number of rounds. I just get a feeling. I've been shooting guns for over 40 years. I just bought an M&P15 for christmas. I've had it out 4 times so far. I've put about 700 rounds through it. Of the 700; 200 were brass PMC Bronze and the other 500 were steel case russian. Mix of tula, silver bear, MFS, and Herters. I've used USGI mags; PMags; and quite a few Thermolds. (Both 20 and 30 rounds). I haven't really cleaned it other than a bore snake down the tube and a little gun-scrub at the ramp and chamber. I run AR's and AK's wet, so I oil pretty good. I haven't had 1 round do anything abnormal. All fired. All extracted. All ejected. All fed. As far as I'm concerned, and that's all that matters, my M&P15 is reliable.

The one malfunction problem I've run into in 40 years with AR's is the fact that carbon builds up in the male/female portion of the bolt and will eventually cause malfunctions. Plus it's difficult to get out if left uncleaned for too long. I'd suggest taking the bolt apart and cleaning that area, especially deep inside the female portion, every time you clean your rifle.

Are you referring to the tail of the bolt? I find that interesting because it doesn't mimic what most people experience.

If you keep it lubed it isn't difficult to remove. I assume that you are referring to a dry one.

I have cleaned that particular area once in the last 3500 rounds.

Since every Colt M4 that leaves the factory is function tested with a full 30 round magazine, actually they do.
