It looks real. It's an Aimpoint Comp M4, not M4s. The M4s has the battery module on the low right of the unit, instead of the module on high right (when looking through the unit). Here are a few ways to tell if it's fake:
1) If it has a green dot it's definitely fake.
2) If the objective isn't threaded, it's fake.
3) If it takes anything other than a AA it's definitely fake.
4) If the first level of "on" shows a dot, it's fake. (This unit is NV comp so it's going to take a few twists until the dot's come on w/o NV use)
5) If it has Aimpoint in white (which it doesn't appear to be) it's fake.
6) If the brightness adjustment knob does NOT have stop in it (as in you can continually turn through all the settings then repeat) then its fake.
The front flip cap is a real aimpoint cap, so that's a good sign. I thought the battery indicator and dot just forward of the adjustment knob was odd, but that's supposed to be there as well on the M4's. Also that is the QRP 2 which is why it looks different than the older QRP mount, which is the correct mount for these. You can also call AP with the serials and they can verify it for sure. However I believe this is a real unit, and if he has good feedback like you say then I wouldn't worry about it.
Hope this helps.
