    Reeelly Dumb Question About Scopes

Do most/all scopes have a focus adjustment?

May sound idiotic, but I've only handled a few, so please bear with me.

I want my carbine to be configured for ranges from CQB to about 200 yards. For several years a red dot used to be adequate for this -- even the irons long ago if was daytime -- but progressing eye degeneration is making them less and less feasible. I've tried several different models of Aimpoint and Eotech, but currently with none of which can I obtain a precise enough image. (Search thread titles for "astigmatism".) Little comets, grape clusters, etc. are typical.

I've recently handled a couple of friends' 1x4 scopes which had a focus adjustment. I had to change the settings a lot from what their owners had them on, but once I did what a difference! The reticle became sharper than anything I've seen in 10 years.

I've been looking around the web at different 1x4's, but focus adjustment is never mentioned as a feature. Is that just because it is standard on every scope out there?

I realize there are other trade-offs between red dots and scopes, but at this point having an image I can can clearly distinguish would be an end unto itself.

    Thanks for aiding the un-educated.

The quick-focus feature is standard on scopes from Zeiss, Swarovski, Schmidt & Bender, and others, but it is not a standard feature on all scopes.

Many scopes without that feature can be adjusted by loosening the lock ring on the eyepiece and screwing the eyepiece in or out until the reticle appears sharp against a light-colored background or sky (don't forget to set the lock ring when done).

Have you had a chance to try my Kahles 1.1-4x?

Yes, you'll be able to adjust the focus on anything except the Trijicon ACOG.

Sorry, I should have specified that I wasn't looking for quick focus, just something that can be initally adjusted to my eye and then forgotten.

Was that the one you had by the lake while gun cleaning with your dad? If so, that was one of the experiences I was recounting. Uber-sharp image, but only after I cranked the ring a full couple of turns from where you had it.

How many shekels are you willing to part with?

Here is one I've heard some good about, and is about my upper limit. I particularly like this one's reticle.

Within the same price range, I'm open to anything illuminated (needed for low light). Greentop is currently selling the Accupoint TR24 for the same price. My main concern with tritium is having to replace the entire unit once it begins to dim.

My only other major concern with switching from a red dot is the substantial weight increase. I'm hoping the improvement in image quality may be worth the extra heft.

I'd highly suggest the Trijicon TR-24 series.

Sounds like I should go back for a closer look then.

Somewhere I remember reading that one of their colors was best for use with a flashlight.
