The decision to offer a lower cost AR was probably made by guys really very high up on the ladder that who have never heard of the chart or would really care if they did, much like the buyers of this product.

Though the focus of this thread is on the sport version, note that other features have apparently migrated to the M&P lineup...1/8" twist melonite coated barrels and integrated trigger guards. I agree that the 'Sport' model isn't going to appeal to most of the M4C user audience, but the move away from 1/9" twist barrels is a step in the right direction.

Our local pd just ordered 15 of the S&WORC. They did this to get each outfitted with a eotech, more pmags, ambi sling plates and flashlights, without busting the budget. I tried suggesting to just buy colt's but only to be snuffed out by "I know Smith and Wesson is quality"," The colt I had in vietnam was junk".. The price was not a real issue as they both would have fit.

Yeah, and that's what I was really asking about. I wouldn't buy the sport model, but if these other features are going to be on some of their more "serious" rifles then that is a good improvement.

That's too bad, for duty weapons I think they would have been better served buying a nice mid length with a proper full auto BCG outfitted with the appropriate weight buffer rather than the carbine buffer which as far as I know S&W still uses.
Added- for a duty weapon I don't think I could abide not having irons either.

I actually saw one of these at a local shop on lunch today.

I am seriously thinking about picking it up for $650.

The upper does nothing for me but I do like the lower with the built in trigger guard.

I figure I could sell the upper for around 400 and have a nice looking complete lower for around 250.

Anyone know of any problems with these new lowers?

    ETA:
By the way, sorry for the thread Rez. I just figured this was better than starting a new one.

Yep. Had one in my hands today.
It was ok. Honestly though I was just excited about the lower. The upper isn't really that great. Although the Bolt was marked MP and the staking was good.

Once i get this BS straitened out with my stolen property I am going to see about getting one.

kewls; I bought an M&P15OR at christmas time for $649. If you look, you can find the good deals. There's no reason to pay for the cheaper made M&P sport, when you can get the real M&P15 for about the same price. NOW: If you for some reason can NEVER find an OR on sale, and must pay the normal price of $949-$1069, then yes, the sport seems like an option. But i have found the OR on sale 3 times in the last 12 months. No reason to buy the sport. That's for people who don't know how to shop or use the internet.

Except Kwelz said the only part he was interested in was the lower with the integrated trigger guard which I don't believe the OR has (or at least not as show on their website
