Good piece. Especially the part about not depending on crooks being terrified by racking the slide. While it did have a positive effect sometimes, I had several guys that were less than impressed.

Great post. Thanks for all the time you put into this. I've been evaluating a sling on my FN SLP (I've never had a sling on a shotgun before, to be honest) and hadn't really thought about weapon retention.

That is correct and as soon as you get the gun out of the rack its chambered and another round is put in the magazine to replace the one you just put in the chamber. There is no waiting around to confront the bad guy to impress him by racking your gun. That is stupid.

One problem I had with the article is stating you need a rifle barrel and sabo slugs to get good accuracy with slugs. With Breneke slugs I can shoot 6 inch groups at 100 yards all day long without a rifled barrel. I much prefer a rifle to a shotgun for most things. But to say a shotgun is useless as a slug gun is wrong.

Excellent article Mr. Copp. I know of quite a few people that think that shotguns are the end all be all weapon for everything. The whole "racking scares 'em away" mythos frustrates me to no end, as I have heard several leo's quote that to me. It's even more fun to hear some good ol' boy tell you a rifle is only a toy and a shotgun is for "serious" work . . . whatever the hell that means.
