I believe this to be true for both the M855 and XM193...
As far as I know there is nothing (a law) that prevents ammo companies from selling ammo that meets all the mil-specs to civilians. As long as it doesn't first go to the military, they could do it. My understanding of why the stuff being sold is referred to as clones is that none of us know that it actually meets the mil-spec. It kinda, sorta looks like the genuine article, but we don't know, and the companies don't seem to be saying.

Some ammo obviously doesn't meet the mil-spec because some requirement is obviously missing.

Agreed, as long as it wasn't dilivered to the Military under contract it can be sold to civilains! If it was Mil contract it has to go DRMO which is prevented by law just to sell it! It has to be demilled and sold as components! Remember the big flap over the DMRO not selling brass!
That was the Obamanation trying to prevent all that good brass from going to us US citizens! Just like they prevented the Korean M1's from being sold to us.

Every iteration of Federal xm193 with whatever suffix I have use fired, was reliable, and gave me 3-4 in. groups at a 100 yds. Speed wise they were all about 3150 to 3200fps out of my guns.

Thanks Tom, I guess I found the best answer to what I was asking from you. So, it appears that for me, the 'clone' really doesn't make any difference, as long as I am shooting 5.56 in mr 5.56 rifle.

I was going to answer 7gr, but Molon had a much better and more comprehensive answer...

Thanks for all the details Molon, very informative.

They are mil spec rounds. The X means they were rejected during QC. Applies to M193 and M855. Still good ammo.

I've got the "Necro-Post Of The Year" award in the bag this year. 5 years is only halfway there.
