    14.5" barrel + muzzle device = Legal 16"?

I am finalizing my custom build with one thing holding me back.

Can the forum confirm that a 14.5" barrel paired with a 1.5" muzzle device that is pinned & welded to make it 16" in overall length will make me compliant with 16" length federal/state requirement.

    Thank you!

Technically, the muzzle device must add 1.5", not just simply be 1.5" long. When you thread it, part of its OAL will overlap the barrel.

You need a muzzle device that't designed to fill that gap, like the last post stated. Battle Comp has one that's designed to do just that. There are others as well. The measurement is from the bolt face to the tip of the barrel and it should be greater than 16" so there is no confusion that you're over the required length. It's easiest to measure with a dowel inserted in the barrel and marked at the tip of the barrel then measure the dowel, if you want to get freaky about it.

When I rebarreled my carbine, I installed a Battlecomp 1.5 and it measures out to 16.25" from the bolt face. I don't think a 1.5" muzzle device will cut it, it'll be an inch too short, therefore an SBR requiring a tax stamp from the ATF's NFA branch.

Good point guys. I didn't even think about the overlap.

Aside from the Battle comp, what other brands will do the job for my purpose?

    Thank you.

BCM makes this extended A2 style fh and it comes with a pre drilled hole and a metal pin to pin the hole: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-A.../bcm%20a2x.htm

Me too. On both my 5.56 rifles. They don't cost that much and work well for flash suppression. I've heard they are also compatible with a couple of sound suppressors, but I have no first hand knowledge of that setup.

A good, low-cost alternative is the Yankee Hill Phantom series.
