Thanks guys.
Can someone please explain to me the reasoning for a non-armorer to have a headspace guage? If you are not installing a barrel extension, why on earth would you need one? Is there a problem with headspace changing on an M4/AR that I am not aware of?
Just trying to understand better!
Thanks.
There is a small possibility that the headspace can increase from use. This is why the military requires annual gauging.

All things mechanical wear over time. Most of us don't shoot enough to need a set of gauges, but it's better to have and not need...
Would this item be all that is needed to confirm proper head space when installing a new barrel, or would one or more of the the other gauges (no go, field, ?) be required as well?
Thanks.
Okay - As I understand it, the barrel extension is screwed onto the barrel. How many turns or percentage of a full turn of the extension would be needed to truly effect headspace? Also, what would cause the extension to turn? The locking and unlocking of the bolt?
Trying to understand what causes headspace change.
The barrel extension doesn’t turn. An increase in headspace would come from wear on the bolt and barrel extension lugs.

That is what I thought. I am just trying to understand the need for a civilian to own a headspace gage. i guess it is plausible that a civilian would shoot enough ammo through a single gun, but really? If you are at the point of headspace issues from too many rounds, then wouldn't you be at the point of possibly needing a new barrel as well? So you could just replace the barrel, right?
