    .

    I've been in the market for a 1-4X for a while. Cotton-picking kids...

    From the ones I've looked at, I've narrowed my choices down to the new model Meopta (due out in May) or the Votex Razor. currently, I am leaning towards the Razor but I'm waiting for the reticles to grow on me.

    LINK to the new Meopta.

    IF I was penny pinching for a scope, I would not buy QD mount for it so I could spend $200 more on the scope. I'd get the best glass I could afford and then save up for a QD mount. Until then, I use Burris XTR's or the Burris PEPR.

    But maybe it's just me...

    I'm sure it's fine, I just would rather see recommendations for a piece of gear from an actual owner, not a soon to be owner.

    OK. I get the point you were making now that I re-read. At first I thought there was an issue with the scope I had not read about. Thanks.

    I'll put in a vote for the TR24-R. I like the red and amber triangles better than the green (personal preference). They can be had with a mount for under $800, often in pristine condition. Great optic for 0-300 - it works well with a 50yd/200m battle zero.

    I love my TR24, but if you want to see one of the best pieces of glass Trijicon makes - have a look at the TR22. It's an awesome SPR optic for 5.56 or 7.62 if you get the mil-dot reticle and is very bright - can also be had for under $1000 with a mount.

    I have a Nightforce NXS 1-4 with the NP-1 reticle which I have owned for 3 years. I bought it from Lilja as they had that reticle in stock. I own 3 Zeiss Conquest scopes, 1 Zeiss Diavari, 1 Kahles american 3.5 x 10, 2 Leupolds, 1 of the new Minox 3 x 9 scopes and assorted lesser scopes of various brands on 22 LR's and other stuff.

    The NXS is on a Noveske 16 inch Recce with Vis in a Larue mount. The center 30-40% of the optic is very clear and the edges of the image are very soft. It went back to Nightforce and they replaced the objective, which did not fix the problem. If you focus the scope on 4X then use it on 1X the image looks a bit odd to me. To me the eye position is critical compared to other scopes I own as well. I have always wondered if I have a lemon but I would have thought that Nightforce would have replaced it when I sent it back in. On the plus side the zero has been solid and the adjustments accurate. It is not overly hard to hit a chicken egg at 100 yards using XM193 off of a solid bench rest (private range). If I had to sum it up I would say I am disappointed that I find better optics in a $399 Zeiss conquest. My next one is going to be a bump up in power, maybe the Leup 1.5 x 5 VX3 IR or the new 2-7 VXR, they cannot be any worse and are less money. I am kind of disappointed with NF service as well.

    Another vote for the SWFA SS 1-4X. Here are a few of my initial observations;

    1. Solid build quality - there is nothing cheap feeling or looking about it.

    2. Clear, bright optics, sharp reticle

    3. On my covered turret model, the elevation/windage adjustments are crisp and feel precise.

    4. Worth noting, the objective lens is set about 5/8" in from front edge of tube. This will help protect the lens and better shade it.

    5. On the 1X setting with both eyes open, the merge of view between both eyes is seemless. In other words, a straight line through the field of vision matches up perfectly with no offset, distortion or difference in size. The field of view is crisp to the very edge.

    6. My 57 year-old eyesight hasn't been great for a mighty long time, but I was able to get both the reticle and target in good focus.

    7. I mounted it in a Larue SPR-S LT-158 and found I had to push the scope forward as far as it would go. With the CRT stock, the first position out from fully collapsed was a bit too close, the second position just about perfect. I have a LT-139 on order and mount the scope with the turrets centered between the rings, which will move the scope another 1/2" or so forward.

    8. IMO, reticle illumination is perfect. On all but bright backgrounds, the illumination is fully visible. For example, today is bright-overcast and viewing normal mid-tone scenes (foliage, IDPA targets, etc.), the illumination is vivid and pulls the eye right in. Placing the reticle on snow or toward the sky, the reticle turns black. At all times, the reticle remains very sharp and easy to see.

    The donut reticle is IMO very well thought-out as well. Using the conversion factor of 1 millirad = 3.6 inches at 100 yards on the diagram below, the 20 millirad scale in the center of the circle covers exactly 6 feet top-to-bottom or side-to-side, the distance between light crosshair sections covers exactly 12 feet. I think this reticle design is very useful for up-close to as far as one would want to shoot a RECCE-style rifle.

    I will be using this scope at a carbine class in a few weeks on my 16" BCM SS410 middy and will share my further impressions. If this scope proves to be durable and trouble-free, I think SWFA will have a winner with this one.

    Some other useful reviews can be found here and here.

    I posted previously in this thread that I would put my vote in for the SWFA SS 1-4HD. I pulled the trigger on it last night. Ordered up the scope, a ADM scout-x recon mount (3in forward ext), a set of butler creek flip up caps, & preordered the cattail for it from them as well, & should get that in early April.

    Will either make a new thread or post a quick review in this thread. (since there are already tons of in depth reviews on it elsewhere).

    But I went with the SWFA SS 1-4, because it looks to be the best reticle on the market, with a true 1x setting, while still being usable to 500+ yards, which is about the max my standard AR (with 16" barrel) shooting .223/5.56 is good for.

    I had some time to sight in the scope today and tried it at a variety of engagement distances.

    Some observations;

    1. The glass is very nice! Bright, sharp and clear to the edges, at 4X I could see all the fine detail on the target.

    2. Once the ocular was adjusted for my vision, the reticle is very sharp.

    3. Set at 4X, the hatched crosshair reticle inside the circle is excellent for precision shooting. The inside of the circle covers 8 feet at 100 yards, so it dosen't even "register" in the view when aiming at a small target.

    4. Set at 1X, I tried some off hand shooting at an IPSC target from 25 yards. At this setting, the circle works like a large dot and is quick to get on target. It was an overcast day so the illumination was very bright at setting 11 (I still prefer leaving it off).

    5. Cat tail is needed. It was about 40 degrees and the zoom ring took some effort to turn.

    I am very pleased with this scope. As I stated in my previous post, the scope is very well made and feels like it can take some abuse. The glass is excellent and the reticle design works very well. IMO, it's a keeper!

    Photo below of the scope mounted. Note that the rear Butler Creek cover is too small and is just caught on the edge of the eyepiece, making the scope look longer than it really is.

    I can't believe the Burris XTR-14 hasn't been mentioned. Awesome scope, built like a tank, bright glass, awesome reticle that works great for holdovers accurately, when it's turned on it's like an aimpoint with an eotech reticle, comes with XTR rings in the box, has a rubber insert to secure extra batteries under the windage cap...I can go on. I love this scope and it definitely gets my vote. You should check one out.

    I'm a big acog fan and love trijicon, but the 24 has that weird post. I want to use what's "supposed to be" under that fat post. With my XTR14 I have no problem doing 3-inch groups off sandbags at 300 with my coyote gun. The gun gets bashed around a lot too, riding around in the truck to my various coyote hides. I've dropped it on pavement showing it to a friend(about a 5 foot drop the day after I got it and sighted it in ) and it's always held zero flawlessly. Look into it.
