it should be Man's hope and effort that the singularity be executed and lead by Man, not machine. since we'd then be programmable machines ourselves, whoever controls the event controls the race.

    No, I don't think so.

Does it cough? Does it experience anxiety? Does it feel concern for the future? How about concern for it's children's futures? I could go on and on and on.

Maybe we can now start considering a good multi-player game of COD real combat. After all, it's happening in a computer.

the android scenario is a far-into-the-future and/or extreme case scenario. there are more than a few eccentrics who would do it, but i doubt that's gonna be one for mass consumption. more likely, it'll be a next step for people who've already undergone brain matter conversion at an earlier point, and whats left of their natural bodies has become too limiting or too much maintenance. that way, the converted brain can be physically transfered from the cyborg body to the android.

    maintains that "preservation" factor.

either way- cyborg, android, or a combined effort- the argument is that we're nothing more than the sum of our neural pathways. our brains are collections of neural pathways which are formed from exposure to stimuli from the moment neurological activity begins in the womb. the sensory systems send data to the brain, which shoots the signal through our grey matter, creating a physical pathway of connected and excitable neurons. that pathway is now devoted solely to the function of that task/memory/reflex/association/emotion/etc. these pathways are everything that makes us us, and these pathways are mappable.

IF the argument is true- IF we're nothing more than the sum of our pathways, then if you map out and copy a person's psyche, the duplicate, or replacement, should be an exact copy of the original, in every way. including the individual's fears, ambitions, devotions, etc. except programmable, with a vastly increased capacity, and with perfect recall.

There is only one you, and there is no way to replicate you. You are born once, and will die once.

Even if you could store the sum of all your experiences in a machine, it still wouldn't be you.

You'd be better off being buried in a Pet Semetary.

A bit of both, but mostly the former. As a big sci fi fan (usually the stuff written by legit scientists in their field) as well as following the topic via works by people like Ray Kurzweil, etc., it's a topic I have always been interested in.

However, there are all manner of huge technical issues to overcome I feel many of the futurist types simply assume will be over come in X time frame based on formulas of current progress in various areas. That was also supposed to get us flying cars, hypersonic planes, cures for cancer, colonies on the moon, etc, etc.

As much as I like the concept, whether we really can over come the various technical issues, and all the other factors/variables that often prevent progress in any given area, remains to be seen. If we as a species live long enough, I have no doubts of the eventual outcomes as mentioned in the above article and others, but I bet times frames are more like centuries vs a few decades.

If they are correct above, I'm right on the cusp age wise (45) and could benefit.

    Not holding my breath however...

Still, a very interesting topic I try and keep track of.

I want to live a rich, full, and healthy life. I want to progress through life's normal stages, savoring all the lessons and opportunities of each. When my work is done, I want to peacefully leave my body in its bed as I cross over to meet my Lord. I want my loved ones to remember and miss me until we meet again elsewhere.

While I cherish and live life, I also look forward to leaving all the imperfections of humanity behind someday.

Putting my "brain" into a robot is too limiting. I want it transferred into a star ship so I can explore the galaxy.
