Unhappy public schools gone wild (again)

This is ridiculous. The whole series of events must have been very traumatic for the kid. I see no reason why the school could not handle a stick figure drawing on its own. Meet with the parents, meet with the counselor, put the kid in detention if appropriate, etc. The kid did not have a weapon, he did not threaten anyone, he did not otherwise misbehave. It seems the school officials may have done some serious damage here. [IMHO]

    ...

The boy...suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder and was told by his therapist to draw pictures when he feels himself get upset or agitated.

On that day last year, he drew a picture of himself as a stick figure, using a gun to shoot several other stick figure people, his mother said. Above the figures he wrote, "teachers must die" and "music sucks."

"It was what his doctors had told him was the right thing to do," [his mom] said, according to Fox 31 News.

    ...

[His mom] said police refused to let her go with her son, who was put into handcuffs and taken to the station. Once there, the boy was allegedly fingerprinted, photographed and put into a cell.... He was charged with interfering with staff and students at an educational facility, a third degree misdemeanor.

Sorry man, I'm all for government-free firearm policies and I'm completely against shrinks being able to tell us if we can own firearms or not, BUT...

When a kid draws a picture of shooting students and teachers and expressly writes "teacher's must die," something is very wrong. The kid shouldn't necessarily have been arrested, but in no way is this something that should have gone unchecked. I don't know the right way to handle it, but I do know it would be completely irresponsible to just overlook an incident like this.

It isn't like he drew a toy gun - he drew pictures of himself killing teachers.

I tend to think this is ridiculous. It is an 11 year old doing what 11 year olds do. Talk to the parents, etc if you are concerned.

When I was a kid we sang "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school" to the tune of the Battlehymn of the Republic. (At the school at recess for example). Kids probably still do. In the version we had, in the second verse, it went something like

"I opened up the door with a loaded 44 and the teacher don't teach no more"

Did anyone think that we really were going to get 44s or any guns and kill teachers? No, they laughed and we got on with school and business.

ETA: This type of response is much more likely to cause the kid problems and really push him to do something stupid. Way to go Colorado!

Worst of all, that old, empty threat of "this is going on your permanent record" is true these days.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

It's sad because it's true. This is why I'm going to homeschool my kids when the time comes.

is it norm for a 11 year old to be separated from the parents and have no one their ?
that seems a bit excessive and I think if it was my kid I would get a ton of lawyers lined up to ruin ever one involved any way I could

will be curious to see where this one goes
