I believe the SCAR would serve your needs.

With that said. If I had to choose one carbine between my favorite AR or the SCAR I would still take the AR. The AR is just so easy to get parts for and those parts cost so much less. As an example I still can't buy an extra bolt for my SCAR and there are plenty of other good examples.

I'm not attempting to beat up the SCAR, I really do like mine. There are still some things I can't buy for it that I can for my ARs and the things I can buy for the SCAR are, on average, expensive compared to the AR.

I'd have a SCAR, I'd just have a good AR first.

Now in 308 I believe it is much easier to justify the SCAR over the AR platform (just my opinion).
    What he said !
The 16 is great. Eats anything and accurate. The 17 is in a league of it's own. BUT, break an extractor and you're out-of-business for 6 weeks.

Yup. A quality midlength is the right choice. Well done. I like my SCAR and have no plans of ditching it, but to be honest I still prefer my M4.

I think you made the right choice. A quality LW middy and plenty of $ left over for ammo.

I have 3 5.56 rifles. A colt 6940, an XCR, and a SCAR. When its running and guning I like my Colt. If I had to run out the door with 1 rifle into the apocolypse and rely on pissing on the weapon for lube and hope the f'er doesnt brake, Id grab the SCAR. After I make a few changes to the XCR it would be in the same catagory. But based on my general impressions of each, the SCAR seems to me to be the one that could take the most neglect/abuse if I ended out in the world with no support for any rifle.

No I wont buy a peasent rifle! (AK)

Not trying to bust your OO's but I've read/heard 3-4 different reports that SOCOM dropped the SCAR-L because it did not offer any/enough advantages to justify it's premium over the M4. However if you have some knowledge I have not heard before please share.
Sort of, there is a little more to the story. One of the main reasons SOCOM did not go with the SCAR L had to do with how money is allocated between the Regular forces and SOCOM. If they went with the SCAR L they would have to purchase the weapons out of SOCOMs budget funds. If they kept the M4, they could just use regular Army issue units and not have to pay for it out of their budget. So expensive SCAR L or free M4? Being that the SCAR L was not leaps and bounds better and nearly the same, they could not justify losing the money when an M4 was free. The SCAR H is a different story. There is no regular Army equivalent.

Yes, this is pretty much the heart of the reports I had read.

Brian1/75 did an excellent job of explaining in deeper detail as well.

That is what I heard also and from what I know of the Army it makes sense (as the reason). It is interesting what units are willing to spend their own funds on vs. someone else's budget!

Also pretty much the same reasoning given in this thread for civilian AR purchase vs. the SCAR. Not a big enough improvement over the M4 to justify the cost...and hard to get parts/maintenance support.

Can you blame SOCOM? That is a lot of money they could spend on other weapon systems and fun stuff. Why piss money in the wind? Best save that money to outfit them with 7.62 weapons that offer real knock down power.
