Long rails are technically heavier than an exact same version in a shorter length...but it can be negligible depending on the rail.

My DD Lite 12 FSPM rail with its mounting hardware is only about 2 oz heavier than a mid-length plastic MOE which would retain the stock barrel nut and end cap. ~2 oz. is a small price to pay (esp. with a LW 14.5" barrel) for all that room.

An 11" TRX extreme probably weighs less than a 9" MOE hand guard. So the additional length for comfort comes at very little weight expense with today's lightest rails.

My previous rifle had a DD 12" Lite.

I wanted a lighter rifle, but did not want to give up accuracy to get there.

Went with a custom Noveske/MSTN 16" barrel with an intermediate length gas system and 13" TRX Extreme. Wes Grant really came through on the barrel. Mad props to MSTN.

What I like about the TRX is that you can put rails exactly where you want them. The Mount-N-Slot mounts allow you to loose the weight of the rails, attatching directly to the TRX.

My gripe with the TRX is that it doesn't seem as high quality as the DD. But it's a $158 rail compared to a $365 rail. I like the mounting of the DD better, but I really dig how low profile the TRX is.

    Here's a good reason:

I didn't like mounting the PEQ-2A on the 12 o'clock rail, so it was mounted on the 3 o'clock rail. With a PEQ-15, since it's lower profile than the PEQ-2A, I do mount it on the 12 o'clock rail

I don't like rails and prefer mid lenght MOE's. I like ARs smooth and snag free without a bunch of crap on them.

Some people need it, either for technique or electronics, but more and more it seems to be the cool thing to do. It’s pretty common to see guys that are 5’6” at best , utilizing a grip that would fit onto a 7” carbine no problem, yet they somehow need a 14” rail to hold their
    X300.

At some point it’s jumped the shark a little bit.

Thats what i was thinking about. im about 5'6 and realistically all ill ever need is a light and a grip. I would get the magpul MOE's but i want the accuracy and cooling properties of a FF rail system. I just personally dont envision a need for that much rail on a carbine. now if someone wants to donate a IR designator then maybe ill get the 9" rails.

I thought about going with a longer rail system on this, sometimes it gets pretty crowded down there.

    I may do it yet.
