Rob, first off thanks for the chart and even more thanks for the explanation of features so that people can know what the boxes on the chart actually mean. If people can combine this information with knowledge of how the weapon system works ("book learnin'" + practical application) they'll be in a good place to choose what meets their requirements.

Rob, many thanks for all the quality information that you (and of course others) provide completely for free. Your M4 Chart is just a part of this - there is a wealth of information here and elsewhere on the Net if you can just wade through the crap to find it (like Grant did when looking for a good metal detector). Your chart and explanation pages make it especially easy to digest a tremendous amount of information.

You mention your budding writing career and I think you're wise to culitvate it. You're an excellent writer and I always buy a magazine that has an article written by you. Your new Chart almost certainly would guarantee a paying magazine article or two each year and maybe that's the best venue for it, especially since so much of your time and effort has gone into versions of the chart. Why not get the reward that you deserve?

Anyway, I hope new versions of the chart become available and I certainly would not mind paying for it, whether you sell the article to a magazine or via Paypal or a subscription on your website. Good luck to you however you proceed from this point.

I apologize if this has already been mentioned, as I only read the first few pages of the thread.

One thing that I think is overlooked when somebody posts a random "I would like to see brand X on the chart" post is that sometimes the individual shooter may have difficulty getting answers from a manufacturer. I have been trying to get answers from a smaller manufacturer in my area for some time. They don't reply to my emails, and I am therefore in no hurry to buy their product.

Perhaps there is an expectation that if somebody with more repute or a larger goal than buying one personal rifle (e.g. publishing data that can lead to hundreds or thousands of sales) contacts the manufacturer, that they will have better luck. Just a thought.

Add me to the list of people who are glad to see progress being made on a new chart. It really does serve a purpose and there are those who really do benefit from it.

Thanks for all the work you put into the chart Rob. While this is my first post, I've spent several months reading threads on m4c and educating myself. I got my BCM blem lower last week, and my BCM 16" middy upper should be delivered today. Without your chart and the knowledge of other forum members, I might be sitting here with a DPMS, Oly, or Bushmaster.

Rob, DPMS has lost two sales in my area because of your chart.

The chart was definitely a big help for me starting out......although it ended up costing me a lot of money. The Bushmaster I had disappeared and two mid lengths showed up, one BCM and one Daniel Defense.....funny how that happens huh .

This web site and the chart have contributed to my BRD too.

I wonder if the chart has, or will in the future, change how a company does business. Maybe High Standard (just an example)will see that they don't compare favorably, and then discover that it wouldn't cost them very much to have better, tested barrels, bolts, what have you.

One way or another, I see the old chart, and the new one, as a service to the AR community as a whole. As long as one doesn't put on their asshat, they can use it for the tool that it is.

This is what I want to happen more than anything .

I just had to chime in again because of what I just saw.

I found a link off GunBroker to a Field and Stream article on (supposedly) the 25 best AR's out there. Bushmaster and DPMS figured prominently, but not one BCM made the list for example. DPMS made the list more times than Colt. Horrifying. Obviously, that author either did not know of the chart, or did not think its criteria were as important as other things.

I want the chart to become so widely used that it becomes almost like an industry TDP for civilian AR's.

I know rob_s is frustrated by the unintended consequences of his chart being misused right now, but the good news is that is pretty good evidence that the chart is having an effect.

What needs to happen now is for people like you and me to really put the chart out there. Every time you talk to a dealer or manufacturer, make sure the chart is your standard and demand nothing but products that meet the criteria. Then punish the frauds by avoiding their products and making sure the world knows they placed marketing ahead of quality.

EDITED TO ADD: I talked to a dealer the other day, and mentioned BCM, DD, Noveske, LMT as top tier brands and asked him what brands he carried. To make a long story short, after a thirty minute conversation he finally admitted that he carries Armalite because he knows people there and gets specials from them.

This is what we are up against.

This is why I rarely, if ever, take anything written in a gun rag as gospel. Magazines showing Model 1 Sales for SWAT and tactical applications.

In fact, I've only ever seen one article about BCM, and it was extremely short. I think it has to do with advertising, but not sure.
