The Colt 6920 is still the gold standard for the kinds of rifles being discussed here (if you're talking about competition, or benchrest, or hunting, or whatever else that may not apply). They are typically ~$1200 for a complete gun (rifle, furniture, sights, magazines, sling) that is ready to shoot, just add ammo. There may be "better" options for all of the sub-parts (furniture, sights, magazines, slings, etc.) but the parts that come with the gun can absolutely be completely serviceable, and should be experimented with on the range and in training and practice to determine their shortcomings for YOUR needs.

Perfectly acceptable alternates are available in the ~$1,000 range.

Spamming the tech threads with posts like this is not in line with the purpose of this site. I would strongly suggest it doesn't happen again.

Boy, talk about tugging on Superman's cape...

I appreciate the opinions of members here. When I first joined this site I could see the difference in demeanor among the senior members.

I have a law enforcement background, and call it instinct or whatever, you can tell when people are serious operators and not just hobbyists.

That's why I trust the members here to make good recommendations.

As for the chart, I do have to respectfully disagree with the characterization of the chart user being "lazy." Not everyone can research a subject to the same depth as rob_s, and that's why I appreciate the chart. I am not sure that any amount of in-depth research on my part would have told me who batch tests components and who tests each and every one. When makers like Bushmaster would have you believe that they are the equal of makers who have provided complete weapons to the military (when clearly they are not), it's good to have someone who has the industry contacts who can cut through the propaganda put all the correct information in one concise form.

If I were to contact Armalite for example, would they even answer my individual questions about their product? Or would I simply be told "we have forwarded your questions to someone who will never get back to you?" I think the latter is more likely.

And that's why I appreciate the chart.

So I can see and feel the difference
Most AR's look and "feel" the same. What matters is how they are built, components used and testing done. Most of these things you cannot see. This is where and why a chart is needed.

Its not about validation. Its about knowledge. If you are looking to buy a new AR and don't know crap about one from another, it sure is nice to have some info to help in your decision making.

For instance, I recently bought a metal detector. They all look the same to me and since I know nothing about them, I had to do hours and hours of research to figure out which were the good ones and which ones weren't (as everyone the errornet is an expert) and plugs their favorite brand. I ended up finding some old crusty metal detecting experts that have used every single machine since the 60's and read every thing they have ever written before I made my purchase.

Would I have preferred to look at a chart that compared all the brands showing a detailed listing of the specs that they all offered??? You bet your ass I would!

I think a two year hiatus should be about right. If anyone else would like to join Lawdog, please let me know. I'm here all week.

I see "The Chart" as a very valuable set of training wheels for a new AR owner. Of course old time AR owners downplay it...they haven't needed training wheels in years.

I just bought my first AR 2.5 yrs ago...and the chart was extremely valuable during my early research. I'm by no means a "newbie" to the system either. At the time, I had 16 years military experience with the Colt Commando, M16A2 and M4 to include a recent combat tour.

Though I knew the system inside and out from a user/operator perspective...I had no idea what the difference was between an Olympic Arms M4 type AR, A Bushmaster...and a Colt 6920...and how all those differed from my issue M4 (other than the obvious 3 rd burst and barrel length.)

"The Chart" squared that away (esp. the explanations of features.) I went with an LMT, don't care if it is parked under the gas block and am OK with a semi-carrier (with shrouded firing pin) though I'd prefer an FA carrier.

Haven't looked at The Chart since then, but will look forward to checking out the update even though I stay on top of what the current manufacturers are offering anyway.

As far as to why someone would request a specific manf. on it...beats me? Unless they are a first time AR purchaser and contemplating a specific one, but then they could research that one manf. a lot quicker than waiting on a Chart update.

The specs on The Chart aren't necessarily good or bad (depends on the user's wants/needs), they just are listed and explained in comparison to a chosen standard (Colt 6920) IOT to form a basis of comparison. Don't know why it causes so much drama...
