    Savage model 10 threaded barrel

yes, this probably is another one of my stupid questions but I SWEAR, i looked in many places and i cant call the company untill next week.

Are the threads on the barrel reversed or standard?

there is a thread protector on the barrel that i need to remove to install a muzzle break. i do not want to strip the thread.

Can you just wrap a small towel around it to protect the finish on the thread protector (if you're worried about that) and try to remove it with a pair of vise-grips or pliers? I would think if you put a little pressure on it to test it in either direction it would break lose and you wouldn't hurt anything. I don't envision the threads/protector being that fragile.
