    I've used the 512, 552, 553 and XPS3

I've had the 512 and 552 go down due to issues with the battery contacts. One time was especially embarrassing because I was rolling my own 552 when everyone else was running issue M2's in QRP mounts. Went down at a really bad time.

Never an issue with the 553, and it had the best battery life by far.

The XPS3 is still fairly new and not run hard or often. It's been a champ, but I might sell it and get an EXPS3-2 TAN.

Prognosis: For cheap thrills get the XPS2-0. Great value for what you get.

My favorite is the 553, though.

Though, also have your brother take a look at the Aimpoint Pro, which is also cheap, comes with a mount, and has the edge in battery life and reliability over the 553. I admit this openly, but I still prefer Eotech.

The new transverse-mounted 123 battery has proven MUCH more reliable than the older N or AA models.

If you don't mind stepping up in price, the EXPS models are nice because of the side buttons and built-in riser.
I have the XPS2-0. I recomend that one cause of its size and saving rail space. My buddy has the 512. He likes it, I cant stand it. It takes up the entire upper reciever. But alot of people like them. Ill try an make a list of what I know.
    XPS2-1- Single dot reticle
    XPS2-2-TWO dots w/65moa ring
    XPS2-0-Single dot w/65moa ring
    XPS2-3-Single dot w/65moa ring...NV compatible.
All XPS models take cr123 Batt. 2 3/4".
The EXPS models are the same thing except they have a 7mm riser base that has the quick detach throw levers. The numbers dictate the same reticle as XPS models. The XPS comes with a oversized thumb screw and only takes 15 seconds to remove.
The 552,551,517,512,516 are all about the same length. I never wanted one so I never researched reticles. Some take AA, some NV compatible. Some have ONLY two dot reticles. I would recomend going and looking at them and comparing size before making a $500 commitment.

I have a couple of the EXPS2 OPMODS. They've been great optics for me. I did find the OPMOD billboard a little much, spent $25 at Alternative Coatings to have the aluminum hood Cerakoted.

Interestingly, when I pulled the hood to send it in, I found the night vision button there in the usual location for the EXPS3 models. It was non-functional, but the button is there.

aimpoint vs eotech for a lot of people comes down to which reticle they like better, and how important the battery life is to them. I've got an older 511.A65 with the N-type batteries and the battery life does suck... I shoot it maybe twice a month and the last set of batteries only seemed to last maybe 4-5 months. On the plus side, a pack of batteries is less than 3 bucks at walmart, and even cheaper online.

Newer ones with better battery(s) and built in QD mount are probably better, but you can get an older one for a lot cheaper and get by just fine with it. 1 MOA dot with the close range 65 moa circle is very nice to use.

All depends on what you are looking for.

Mods may want to move this into the optics section...

Forget the older non-XPS models. I've personally had two separate Army issue inline-battery models develop battery compartment issues. Never had or heard of such a problem on the XPS line. In fact the EXPS is the way to go. It's a little more expensive but you get lower 1/3 cowitness and you never have to buy an aftermarket mound so you save a few bucks that way.

Thanks a lot for the input. So; we got a couple 512 suggestions and some XPS-2. That really narrows it down. Now to figure out the different models. There's 5 different XPS-2's out there. FN, Sage, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2. But at least there only seems to be one model of the 512. Thanks again for the input. I'll pull some of the info together and see what my brother thinks. Thanks.

I'm probably getting the XPS also, and i want the quick detach but WITHOUT the 7mm raised base. The only thing i could find was a grreat package deal at GGGaz.com

AZ-Renegade: Whats your reason for purchasing the eotech with just a dot instead of an AP??? This question is not meant to be condescending i'm just asking bc i'm currently weighing the 2 options and i keep hearing that "the only advantage to Eotech over AP is the 65moa reticle". So, what else do you like?

If you look at BCM Junkie's post it explains the differences in the different XPS models.

I knew the different XPS models had different dot configurations. I found that that pretty much is the only difference between them. I'll chat with my brother to see if he can narrow down more about what he wants as his primary purpose. He's back east. Like most, he goes to the range when he can, and home defense. I live in the Rockies. I'll take a gun out my back door and shoot a coyote or prairie dog; pace off 100 yards and set up a target; home defense; or whatever I feel like. 2 different worlds. Thanks again for all the input.
