I'm pretty sure that the reliable fragmentation range for NATO TAP out of a 12.5 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 125 yards, which I assume would be similar for a 5.56 load using SMKs.

The new 50 grain TSX bullet would likely be a good choice for long range terminal effects from a short barrel.

I have a couple hundred rounds of the Black Hills 77gr .223 SMK red box. That should do the trick right?

I have the .223 load of the SMKs though. Do you think load will get the job done just as the 5.56 SMKs for my future 12.5" setup? Or do you think I should look to trade off these .223 SMKs for some 5.56 SMKs? Or maybe even try and trade them for some of this 50gr TSX ammo?

I'm on my phone right now but later I will go and check the ballistics forum and search for molons threads on this info.

I have plenty of other 5.56 ammo that I'm sure will do the trick (62 gr IMI m855) for at least 200 yards but it would be nice to have some ammo that would be nice to have some ammo for long range for my 12.5".

Stickman, that's a nice looking rifle you got there. But do you mind describing your set up? I'm not too familiar and can't tell what you got
there just by looking at the picture. Thank you

BCM lower with Magpul MOE Grip and ACS stock and trigger guard.

Upper is Centurion Arms 9" rail on 12.5 barrel, Magpul MBUS Gen II sights, and Aimpoint T-1 in KAC mount with Surefire scout light with IR head.

Its got the BADASS ambisafety, and will wear the Battle Comp one of these days.

I'm not an expert, I'm just passing on information that I've picked up from reliable sources. What job are you planning on getting done? There is no realistic self defense scenario at those ranges so that leaves target shooting and hunting, right? Target shooting needs accuracy and the SMK loads seem to be popular for that and should work fine. For hunting, if the round depends on fragmentation for full effect, then you would need a different rifle for 200 yard shots. I'm not sure about effective range of soft points and TSX, but my understanding is that those will do better in this scenario since they do not depend on fragmentation for full effect.

The rifles main purpose is for if SHTF. Of course the rifle will be used for training and classes, but thats pretty much it. No hunting. Just want the best possibly 12.5" SBR setup for any possible SHTF situations and therefore I want the best ammo for it. Of course a 12.5" SBRs main purpose would be for CQB, but if I had the proper ammo so that the rifle could reach out to 350 yards than great.

    Very interesting setup.

Im going to have to look into these Battle Comps. All of the members who have posted up their 12.5" setups here are running them.

Im looking at the BCM website trying to find out the difference with all of the different 12.5" uppers they have.

Has anyone here shot the 12.5" bcm Kino? Are there are advantages to it over any of the other 12.5" bcm uppers?

Im sure the are more differences between them, but from what I can see the only difference between the Kino and the other 12.5" bcm uppers that the Kino has a FSB and USGI Government Profile Barrel and the Standard 12.5" bcm upper are low profile with a light weight profile barrel?

    1. Kino:

    http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-S...-12k%20lt9.htm

Says the Kino has a USGI Government Profile Barrel

    2. Standard 12.5" Upper

    http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-1...td11%20fde.htm

Says its a Light Weight Profile barrel. So Im guessing this barrel would be lighter than the Kino barrel?

    3. But then theres this Standard 12.5" Upper

    http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-1...-12%20lt11.htm

Says it has a USGI Government Profile Barrel

Am I looking into this too much? And the upper with the light weight profile barrel is just lighter than the USGI Governement Profile barrel?

Id really appreciate it if someone could break this down for me. Thank you

I had a Kino at first but with it having a fixed front sight base and I i run my rifles, it didn't work for me. I ended up going with the 12.5 Standard with Vtac 11in rail.

Depending how u are going to run ur rifle is which upper u should chose

That set-up sounds awesome. How is the Battlecompe on it in terms of flash? Flashy?

One last question. With the Vltor A5, does it function with all ammo, even light stuff?
