    Aimpoint "style" optics

    Guys,

Im a huge fan of "you get what you pay for". With that said, I have just dropped a $G on a new BCM. It has a mbus but Id like to have some electronics on it as well but for what Im planning on doing, I just think I need to try a knockoff Aimpoint Micro for $40 as I cant swing $600 for anything else at this point.

Ive read that these optics are battle tested and ready or safe from fail or water resistant. Well, I really am not planning on being out in the range, going to loose my life if it does fail. I may do some carbine training at somepoint but the rest will be at the range or shooting metal targets at one of my buddies range.

Anyone have any input on these knockoffs? I mean, it it will cut on and display a dot, Ill be satisfied if it will Zero.

    Just asking as a newbie.

    Thanks.

I am very happy with my Vortex Strikefire. I have the newer Red dot only version and it is pretty bright. Battery life is good and it has held zero with 500 or so rounds shot since I mounted it. I, like you, am not depending on my rifle day in and day out. Also, Vortex CS is second to none and with a no questions asked lifetime warranty it is hard to beat for $150ish. Got mine from www.cameralandny.com Doug and the crew there are great to deal with. I have purchased 3 Vortex products from them and have been very pleased.

    HUH!!!
The two bold statements above hugely contradict each other!

If you are a huge fan of "you get what you pay for", save your money and get what you pay for..

    But maybe it's just me...

Get an Aimpoint PRO, short money ($410) and they are pretty solid.

If you are getting it to "try out" and aren't going to be depending on it for anything other than playing at the range, it is a good buy. It is a very good method of determining if you like Red Dot sights or not, some people don't like them and it is less than what you would be out trying to sell it on the secondary market.

However, having both real aimpoints (M4) and Primary Arms (M4) knock offs, there really is no comparison.

The Aimpoint M4 is many, many times brighter with a much crisper dot. The adjustment clicks are firm and distinct.

The Primary Arms M4 is barely visible in the bright sunlight outdoors on the maximum level, the clicks are indistinct.

It is noticably lower quality but mine is mounted to a .22 trainer/fun gun not on anything I need to be operational.

As long as you aren't depending on it, you should be fine, just make sure you buy from someone who has a good warranty and return policy. The 1st PA I bought was not visible out of doors, only in a dark room.

Checkout the last page of this thread^^^

350.00 for an Aimpoint R1 is a pretty good deal. Add a DD mount for 70 bucks and you're good to go, for WAY less than 600....

Take it from someone that has been in your shoes, DO NOT BUY A CHEAP HUNK OF SHIT! Save up and buy quality.

For fooling around on the range, a cheaper red-dot can serve your needs. I got an AR in a trade with a Tasco ProPoint Plus dot sight on it several years ago. That particular sight has a neat feature in that the dot size can be adjusted (four choices ranging from 2MOA to 10 MOA). The sight worked fine on that AR until I replaced it with an Aimpoint M3. It held zero and its integral mount got it high enough because I had it mounted on a Swan sleeve.

The Tasco now sits atop a Ruger .22/45 pistol and still works fine.

I absolutely understand the wisdom of buying the ultimate gear solution right from the outset. I also can see that one can go with a less bombproof optic for non-critical use and then move it to a purely recreational firearm later. If the zombie apocolypse happens before you upgrade, you'll get by at least as well as you would with no dot-optic on the rifle at all and a piggy bank that is still $50 short of getting the ultimate optic.

You're on a very professionally oriented forum, what do you think most people here are going to tell you?

    This isn't Arfcom.

If you can't afford a decent optic right now, use your irons until you can.
