My father served in the Navy and always had firearms since I was born. At 6 years old, I remember him letting me hold a gun for the very first time and i've been fascinated ever since. We grew up in the major metropolitan are so, shooting wasn't an option but, he would let me help him clean his guns with him on occasions. i moved to the south when I was 15yrs old and started handing out with kids my age that hunted and it pretty much grew from there. When I turned 18, my dad gave me his Iver Johnson M1 Carbine and i used that till I was able to afford my own rifle. Right after the AWB expired, I was able to but a Bushy A2 and the addication started from there.
About 4-5 years ago I purchased an old Sendra lower and A1 upper beater rifle with some issues from a friend that needed some cash .... and that was the start of my BRD. That same friend just purchased it back from me recently ... needless to say it didn't look anything like it did when he sold it to me.![]()
My family always had firearms so I was taught to respect and use them at an early age. My first goto rifle in case of a "zombie breakout" was the M1A, and later the FAL. The FAL rifle was purchased back when you could get them "whole" and not as parts. But, the FAL is getting heavier as the years go by (surely me getting older is not the cause!) and I started looking for something a little less massive. All these years of shooting and I never considered the AR. A few weeks ago I found a somewhat cheap introduction to the black rifle in the way of a slightly used High Standard HSA 15. I came here to research this platform and can't believe the many setups available. I'm now looking forward to building my own rifle in the near future.

My dad always showed me his collection of guns whenever I asked him. I started asking him about his guns around the time I was 4 years old. He always reminded me about gun safety every time I asked him something about guns. Always had to repeat what he taught me before and after I handled a firearm. And he would randomly ask me what I knew about gun safety on any given day.
My dad's collection includes a Colt SP1 and SP2. Those were the ones that always stood out to me the most because he told me soldiers used rifles like them. Since the AR is the most common rifle in media, I always kept seeing them in movies and video games. Eventually I decided I had to have one for myself.
Know your role, and shut your mouth.
Well I'm backwards from most others here. I grew up with firearms and was bitten real young. Around 1990, 26 years old, I could buy a Mini 14 and 10 mags for the same price as a Bushmaster and 10 mags. I tried both and figured out quick that the AR was more accurate. A year later I became a cop but didn't go to SWAT or start carrying one for a couple more years. I went to basic as a reservist at 37.
After figuring out that I knew more than the armorers the department sent me to armorer school to validate what I was already doing on my own for the SWAT teams weapons. I honestly learned more by buying a how to book and DVD and building my own than I did by attending 3 different armorer schools.

My uncle had a Colt Ar-15 when I was younger that we would take to the range. It was a joy to shoot. I eventually, while sitting in the police academy, bored, found this site and was addicted to learning all I could about the Ar/m4 weapon system. Soon after, purchases followed and continues to be had.
I've always had an interest in 'evil rifles' in general, not just the AR. When I was about 16 my dad gave me an SKS, which I thought was the coolest thing ever and of course I replaced the stock on it, etc. Now I'm almost ashamed to admit I own it and I only keep it for sentimental reasons. Anyway a few years ago I picked up a ban era BM from a friend of mine and put a bunch of heavy, poorly selected aftermarket accessories on it. I ended up selling that rifle and after a while I got the itch and decided I had to have another one. I stumbled onto this site one day by accident and have been learning ever since. Now I'm building a rifle that's much higher quality and I plan to go through some official training with it this year. My rifle should be finished in about three weeks or so and I can't wait to shoot it.

My parents didn't like guns. So I decided to assemble one from parts, AR-15 parts were the most widely available and required the least specialized tools. Took 3 years buying one part at a time with paper route money.

Got into it backwards really. I grew up around guns and how I got into the AR is a lot different than most, I was really into centerfire bolt action rifles for varminting and the like. I found out that AR's could be very accurate, and went from there. Still don't have a precision type AR, but the interest led me into the carbines, which led me to my Colt. And then came the urge to build one, then 2, and now, I'm ordering the parts for my first precision rig, quite a while after that type of rifle first caught my eye.
