Educate me as I am new to AR-15s (first post here)

I have been researching AR-15s to death after shooting my uncle's M&P15X, and I am ready to pull the trigger on a rifle (no pun intended).

I have narrowed my choices to a S&W, BCM, or DD 16". My main question is: What is the difference between "mid-length" and "carbine" other than visual difference (longer front part of barrel sticking out on carbine)? Sorry for the elementary question, but there is a lot to learn about these guns.

    Thanks in advance!

P.S. So far this forum has been a HUGE help!

Welcome to the sight. There's an orange search button at the top of the page. Odds are that there's already discussion going on regarding most any question you have. Here's what I got when I searched for 'carbine vs. mid length'.

The midlength has a 9 inch gas system, where the carbine has a 7 inch gas system.

Yep, as one newbie to another, that search function has yielded up much useful information. I've been using it for the past few days and found answers to my many questions.

Nothing wrong with discussion about relevant issues, just that some have been beat to death here. A little research goes a long way.

Still, if you still lack the answer you seek after searching a bit then by all means ask.

If you can afford the BCM or the DD, drop the S&W as an option. BCM/DD beat the SW in almost every area and as of late there seems to be some concerns arising that the SW isn't holding up.

    But maybe it's just me...

Go with a mid length BCM or DD, far better than S&W. just get the one that's either cheaper or has the features that you want.

Good info there. Wish I had a solidworks workup of an AR sometimes.

I've been wanting to draw up an assembly in AutoCAD Inventor. Between the prints I've found online and measuring my own stuff I have all the dimensions. The only ones I can't find are the dimensions of the receiver forgings.
