The midlength has a 9 inch gas system, where the carbine has a 7 inch gas system.
Additionally, the midlength gas system provides a softer recoil impulse than the carbine, making for a potentially more pleasant shooting gun. Not to say that the recoil of a carbine is harsh, but anything that lessens felt recoil is a good thing.
