Have any of you guys taken the 7.62mm out to1000yds in a 16" barrel? If you did, what bullet did you use? I'm going to try my darndest or am i, just going to waste my time and $$, well at least i'll have fun trying . What is the farthest you've taken you gas gun and what barrel lenght do you have on it?

I've taken a 16" MWS with CL barrel out to 600 yards and had no problem hitting silhouette plates 90% of the time with NF 2.5-10X32 and 168 grain AMAX. I dropped down to 50% hits when we moved out to 700 yards.

I was 90% hits at 700 yards with a 20" REPR and NF F1 and factory 175 grain OTM. I was just under 50% hits at 900 yards with this set up.

FWIW, making 1000 yard hits with any .308 has just as much to do with the shooter (wind and range estimates) as the rifle, optics, or ammo. This is illustrated by my ability to ring steel at 1200 yards with my .338 LM since it is a laser for 600 yards.

One of our customers took his LMt to a course using 175 grn Gold Medal and was able to hold his own. I can't remember what groups he was getting, but they were very respectable.

Lowlight over at Snipershide has a GAP 16" and he says he can hit around 5 out of 10 @ 1000 yds

Looked for like 20 minutes til I remembered where I read it.

Ya, it's the most consistent rifle I have at 1000 yards... why on earth would think a 16" GAP 10 would be "consistent" at 1000 yards. If you buy one of these looking to make your mark at 1000 yards, you're smoking crack.

Can I shoot it at 1000, yes, do I, yes, needs 39MOA, and with that I am lucky to hit 5 out of 10 shots, especially being at sea level, with 10+ mph winds.

the 308 is an 800m cartridge, we shoot it farther because we are arrogant and we can, not because it is particularly effect at that range.
That first sentence is of his is sarcastic I believe. Hard to hear sentence tone over the internet lol

They rave about the GAP10 over @ SH and GAP in general

My instructor at GPS Defense used his personal gun (PoF .308) with a 14" barrel, Leupold scope and 175gr. match ammo and was able to hit steel plates at 800+.

I was hitting out to 864 (max.) with a 5.56 SPR type rifle in the course using a Leupold scope and Black Hills match ammo.

Holy cow, awesome feat IG....864yds is really pushing it, the wind must have not been in play at all.

Actually we had some wind all three days. Part of the course teaches you how to calculate range, wind, etc...

One guy in the class had never shot long distance before or with optics and he was consistently hitting on day 3. Day one started a little slow and then picked up quickly. On day 2 we were shooting out past 400 IIRC.

The instruction was top notch and well worth the price of admission.

I have but admit I wasn't very successful. The last time was 2 weeks ago, and it was just too gusty to get any consistency. I could use some better wind estimation skills but I suspect anyone would have trouble with wind from 15-25 thats gusty like a SOB. There are much better calibers for fighting wind....at 750 I had 2.1 mils of windage correction, and at 1k I had ~3mils. If the wind is steady it makes thing easier, and little to no wind even better.

Texas winds are notoriously tough to shoot in..esp. in East Texas.

If we are talking using the .308 cartridge to reach 1k, than there are just so much better options if you intend to primarily do that particular application...hints the reason why the Military guns don't switch to something like a .260 rem or 6.5 creedmoor. It cost more, prob. suffers a bit more than .308 in terminal ballistics, but it blows the doors off the .308 in terms of LR accuracy.

L129A1's w. 16" Rock 5R SST's have confirmed hits down range out to 1300yds...clearly the shooter plays hugely in this equation at that distance, but were talking s/a rifles here and thereby I would assume they launched a cpl. rds before making the mark.

There is a true story from IIrc a Canadian sniper in Astan that had a confirmed at something like 2k + and he was able to walk in like 2-3 shots until he dropped this particular bad guy. During the interview the sniper said the 2 Taliban fighters didn't even act like it bothered em until obviously one fell and never got up....eta...the caliber wasn't .308 it was .338 just to be clear.
