Question Should I ditch my receiver extension?

    Guys,

My name is FoolCrzy and I have accepted the fact that I made a relatively poor choice in my first AR.

I appreciate the honest opinions and Wish I'd stopped by here a bit earlier.

Del-ton 16" kit(from JSE Surplus) on a Stag stripped lower. (Might not be GTG, but at least it's not UTG)

I'm guessing the best part of my weapon is the Magpul trigger guard I put on

I plan on 'fixing' this rifle as funds permit, but for now, I'm stuck with it.

First up is a new ButtStock. The one on it is a wobbly piece of shit. (commercial receiver extension) I've settled on a Magpul CTR.

Should I ditch the commercial tube and get a mil-Spec, or save the $20 and put it toward another 'fix'? That $20 would land me a MOE grip!

I understand the differences in how the threads are constructed, etc.

Right now, I'm leaning toward keeping the commercial tube and putting the extra cash towards something else.

Should I put on my flame suit?

    Thoughts?

    I'd consider a flame suit...

But I'd go with the mil-spec receiver extension.

If funds are short I think you'd be better off with a MOE stock and quality mil spec extension. Unless you plan on using the QD up in the CTR. Paying twice as much for a CTR just for a little bit tighter fit to the RE seems like a waste of money.

For the price of a CTR you can get a high quality Mil-Spec M4 stock, buffer tube, spring and H-buffer. If your're tight on funds and really want to upgrade your stock, this is what I would buy:

It will have some play but will be much higher quality than your current setup. I would probably just buy an H or H2 and a high quality spring for what you have. Spend your money on a better bolt/barrel if you really feel the need to upgrade your DTI.

ETA: I may not be reading your post correctly but if the "Mil-Spec" tube you are considering costs $20.00, it will most likely be a pretty low in the quality department.

Good point. The MOE and a mil-spec extension will be less than the CTR.

No real, or perceived, need for the QD.

ETA: Don't think I meant to say $20

Yep. bolt/barrel are on the list. Will most likely wait until this thing is about shot out, though.

    Good looking stock.

Welcome aboard! And LOL on the 12 step-style introduction...

Check out DSG Arms - they used to offer a combo pack for certain Magpul stocks and a milspec sized RE that cost about the same as the stock body alone.

I've had both MOE and CTR stocks and prefer the CTR.

    Again, welcome!

I agree with others here that a MOE stock would be fine for someone with limited funds. However i dont think a MOE GRIP would be on my list of MUST HAVE upgrades. In all fairness i do have a moegrip on my rifle but an A2 is more then suffecient untill you get more money. Put the money into a quality reciever extension/buffer spring/ and buffer. Just my 2 cents.

Odds are, your commercial rec ext won't be the cause of failure, but you may get lucky and sell it for a minimal loss.

If you don't think you'll sell it quickly, I'd just use it. Make sure you stake it and use use the proper buffer.

I've used the MOE and CTR stocks and the MOE is obviously a better value.

My preference in stocks is VLTOR and I'd buy one of the VLTOR Modstocks that BCM has for $49.99, but then you'll have to switch to mil-spec rec ext.

You're going to lose money either way you go trying to sell parts and upgrade as you go. That's just a matter of how it is. If I had a second-tier AR, I would spend money shooting it and learning the platform and replace parts as they wear with higher-quality parts. Just make sure you stake your gas key, stake your rec ext, and install a BCM bolt-upgrade kit and the proper buffer and shoot the crap out of it.

Thanks Guys, I'm looking at a couple stock options.

Probably going to end up with the MOE. The kit from DSG Arms is priced nicely.

The gas key was laready staked, and I staked the rec ext when i installed it.

I'll look into the BCM bolt-upgrade kit.
