How many rounds have the guns fired? The statement "they haven't had any problems the way they are" makes me believe that live fire training is minimal. We had a group show up with Bushmasters at a three day, 1200 round training course a few years ago. Of the six guns, all six had the castle nuts come loose and four had the gas keys work loose during the first day. One of our armorers performed the repairs IG suggested and the officers were able to finish the course.

These are not modifications as others said, they are repairs bringing the firearms up to acceptable standard. The manufacturers that build unfinished substandard guns should get a kick in the ass. Your best bet is getting your PO Colt rifle accepted for duty use. Good luck.

Are officers not allowed to put privately owned uppers on select fire lowers?

We have personally owned LMT uppers on two Dept owned M16A1 rifles. Different places will allow different things.

One of the first chief's I worked for made us all wear the same pens in our shirt pockets, we could only carry one pair of cuffs had to wear our keepers opening down......... It was a PITA. The chief before him made a lefty wear a right handed holster. That was about 20 years ago. Things have changed for us.

    OP

Did you mount your light that way? Consider flipping it to have the light on top. It will be less likely to be obstructed by barriers and obstacles.

Staking and spring replacement is not modification it is maintenance.

Explain that if the dept is concerned about liability they should be concerned enough to fix them.

Also point out that as per the TM it is supposed to be done and I'll gladly email you a copy of the most current one.
    Iraqgunz,

Is TM 9-1005-319-23 the most current TM?

    Thanks

He learned to roll with it and did very well. By the time I arrived in '95he was a "righty" with his duty gun. I think it came up one day when I saw him writing with his left hand.

If your dept is going the way of the Accredtation Monster stand by. You will see G.O.'s by the dozen changing. All our dept owned guns are Colt's with 14.5" barrels. officers are allowed to modify the weapons to include uppers, but ALL mods must be approved AND installed by one of our departmental armorers. We have a very common sense approach. We are also permitted to use personally owned rifles; all AR platform on the "approved" list. Several officers have gone the SBR route. No select fire weapons are approved except for SWAT. We haven't had a need or them yet, but we are reactive not proactive, so it will take an incident before we order any. That was the only way we got our current rifles. If you would like copies of our current SOP, or G.O. contact me off line and I'll be glad o help you out.

A lot of the work that people are recommending can be filed under the "Preventative Maintenance" umbrella.
While many members here are putting up some good advice, a lot of what you could and should do, gets thrown out the window when dealing with LE departments' guns.

Its an institutional problem, and its not limited to firearms.
The advice above is worth exactly what you paid for it.
